We say this every year (minus the true "gotcha" years), but this "class" is awful.

            Pawtucket offseason report.

Can't believe Ron Lombard actually won his arbitration case.

Pawtucket says goodbye to two players, both signees from the 2001 free agent class:

            The miss:

P Glen 'Coffin' Harrington - yeah, just didnt work out. Seems only certain lefties fit here. Glenn was not a fit going 3.74/ 5.96 era in two seasons. Needing his team option in 2003 to sign Lucca sealed his fate.

            The hit:

1B/2B/DH Helespontico Jarava- some just look at his sub .800 OPS and say he didn't do much, but he really stabilized the top of the order for us and a major reason Pawtucket started trending up. 5.5 WAR in two season (3.9 last) and .317 batting average in a league that has so few .300 hitters in todays deadball era. He will be terribly missed and had he not be turning 36 might of figured out a way to keep him. Will be nice 1B/ DH addition for a team looking for a spark top of the order. Tammany & Boyce were hoping are entering they're prime years and ready to step up.

            Offseason questions:

Lefty hitting- Quinn proved he can hit for power in Pawtucket, but we can use least one more competent lefty that gets on base.

Leadoff- even last year was an issue against righties. Which one of the young kids are ready to step up??? (Saucido, Tammany, Boyce) Tammany has the lefty #1 spot locked up. Rare combination of contact/ power & speed.

Rookie growing pains - Jon Montalvo looks polished on paper. Reminds me a little of Reyes even. Yet on the field only moderate improvements in AAA in 2002. Hoping he was just bored. Also, he's played better when protected with better players. Thinking Lucca, Quinn & Simmons will be a nice situation for him. Its year 3 for Quinn, Tammany & Boyce. Should be the wheelhouse for them.

SP Ivan Gutierrez - Since a waiver trade deal with Washington, this kid has been everything I could except out of a lefty #2-#3 starters. He walks people, but doesnt allow a ton of hits and keeps the ball in the yard. Took a paycut to play another season or two depending on how he performs. Still, 34 approaching so wondering when the wheels start coming off which leads me to the most important question.................

SP Tom Vaccarella - like Tyler Gerald, he is perfectly built for Pawtucket especially if surrounded with a good defense. Now past the mid way pt of his catastrophic 14 month injury he could be ready by July. So far my scout hasnt seen much of a drop off, but its still a long ways to go. Can be a major shot in the arm come midseason if the shiney rainbows & sunshine scenario occurs.

Losing Javara and adding Montalbo to Pawtucket basically means we are converting to more power oriented offense. Some more tweeks will be needed but the core of this team is basically intact.

            Feeling good.

                Saw that..ouch.

BTW- There are ALOT of homeruns sitting on the sidelines in free agency. Also, alot more cash in GM's hands then normal. Might see some 25million a season type salaries. A good Intl class might see some 30million contracts.

                Should be fun.

Hey, 66-win teams don't come cheap.

You aren't Ruben Amaro Jr by any chance, are you?
