              Major news in Pawtucket:

Signed SP Iván Gutiérrez to a 2-year contract extension worth a total of $12,550,000.

Signed 1B Lucca Memmoli to a 4-year contract extension worth a total of $68,600,000.

Signed CF Troy Stucker to a 3-year contract extension worth a total of $1,315,000.

Guiterez and Troy Stucker the ultimate team players putting team above individual paydays.

Might even end up with enough salary room to fill some small gaps. (Unless we trade for more salary)

              Feeling good today.

A solid sim to get the off-season going.

We executed Pineda and Gutierrez's options for next season, for $1.5MM and $14.5MM, respectively. Pineda's was a no-brainer, but I struggled with Gutierrez's for a bit. He's only 36 and pitched lights out for us last year, but he's as fragile as a fishnet stocking leg lamp...

We also signed Camilio for four more years, at about $12.5MM per. I'm still wondering what he's going to end up being during those four years. He seems to have stalled out the last two seasons, and while I don't think he'll approach his first two full years in the league, I think he's better than he's been. Still, this signing is a good value for his offensive and defensive worth, IMO.

Skipped arbitration with Ron Wessel, and agreed to a $6.6MM deal for 2003. We were prepared to offer about the same in arbitration, so we decided to skip the process, sign him now, and gain a little fan interest in the process. If he continues to develop the way we think he will, expect an extension in a season or two.

Oh, and our Rule V guys are all taken care of...

No arbitration cases this year for Denver. We agreed to deals with every player rather than go through the process.

We are offering arbitration to a number of Type A/B guys. I don't expect them to accept. And I don't expect anyone will even offer them contracts so whatever to you guys.

The potential free agent crop is horrible. Good thing it doesn't matter in Denver. A bat or two wouldn't help things right now.

I still think Robbins turns out to be a decent mid rotation arm.

I've never understood Birdbrain. I was fairly certain he was going to be a guy that really blossomed after leaving the Philly org. His progress seemed slow, almost stalled at the time of our deal, but I felt he would get over the hump and reach his potential in a new home.

Vega still has a shot at being a useful arm.

Sadly, Victor Villa appears to have become a typical INTL draftee.

Villa just died, he was a HUGE reason why I didn't move Morris last year. Oh well.

Birdbrain is going to have a breakout year, I hope. He turned on the jets in August going 2-3, 3.03 ERA with 9BB and 47Ks. Sadly he got 0 player development bumps.

Vega still has plenty of time, I just hate all of this slow development of my young kids.

I'd settle for a standard bake. Not this rotisserie crap.

But I don't think most kids are ready for the majors until 26 anyway.
