  • Offseason schedule 2003

Just getting my thoughts in order, does the offseason go something like this?

    1) Accept/ Decline Options- Arbitration
    2) Arbitration-???? Eve of the rule 5 draft
    3) Rule 5 draft- Start of free agency****More on this in a minute
    4) Free Agency 1
    5) Free Agency 2
    6) Free Agency 3/ Start of Sping Training
    7) Free Agency 4
    8) Exhibition A
    9) Exhibition B

    Was I close?

Ok some ramblings about the rule 5 draft. Can we talk about this? I hate it. Not because I don't believe in it. I hate it cuz it leads to nightmares, angry owners, infighting and unrealistic outcomes. Would anyone EVER in baseball realistically lose a top ten prospect in rule 5??????
No!!!! BTW- I fault no one last season. Was all legal plus Jistics just a jerk, but I've been in this league for 13 seasons and over half the seasons I see a "I gotcha" take place. Stupid.

I have WAY to much free time on my hands so its very unlikely I would fall victim to this happening but thats just not the case with every owner. I'm pretty sure if we had an "assistant GM" to along with a full front office these things would be avoiding, buts its fantasyland baseball.

Long story short can we try this:

We get to the rule 5 draft: Can we just have a Forum Folder so everyone can see called "Oops rule 5 miss- Do not draft" there owners who overlooked a player have 24 hours before the draft to put a player that was never intentionally missed. Two simple rules:

1- Must be BEFORE the Sim time called for the Rule 5 draft
2- Team MUST have a spot on the 40 man roster.

Anyone have an issue with this? Why would we have an issue? We all know there will another screw up evenutally.

                Now to hit your points.

Here's why I don't understand why we need a thread dedicated to: oops, I missed this player.

If you're capable of recognizing you missed a player, then you should be capable of handling that before the Rule 5.

We are in the off season right now. There isn't much to do. You know what owners should be doing? Protecting their players.

It's not hard. It's not rocket science. This wait and then need to complain that such and such player shouldn't be taken because I missed him is a bit silly to me.

Why is it that AFTER the last day to protect players owners are suddenly aware that they missed a guy? We have deadlines for a reason. That's the last day to protect someone on your team. Meet the deadline.

If we create a second deadline, you know what's going to happen? Guys will start saying: "I missed the deadline to post that I missed the deadline to protect a player. Please don't take him."

                When does it end?

I agree with Carlos accept when there is an error and someone is made available that shouldn't be. Then we should make the adjustment.

I guess I view it as some form of "checks and balance". The folder is the final "Oh shit, cant believe I left SP- Rod 'Human Blowtorch' Manster off my 40 man roster".

Personally I hate the drama if it all. If it was up to me I'd say get rid of the dam thing and be done with it.(Think Brad made a few notions on it) No way thats gonna happen though.

Just sayin, we are going to go thru this AGAIN within the next few seasons I promise you.

And to add to this there were a FEW close calls that luckily didn't end up making it thru. A few "please dont draft this guy" PMs where the owners (normally the top 10) didnt draft the guy so the original team can then take they're guy they missed.

Yeah, I say its gonna remain an issue.

All joking aside. Rule V reform is sort of necessary. It is so easy for guys to make a mistake, forget a simple sim when your team is in the dumps, or whatever. In RL baseball, this would not happen because it would mean your multi-million dollar job is in jeopardy/gone. Most of the members of our league are important people in RL, with responsibilities that match a baseball GM. Hell, I consider anyone who's married to fit this bill.

I'm cool with regular prospects, just not top 100 prospects.

Yeah, but what I'm saying is that if you can make that post one day later, why couldn't you notice that you are leaving Manster off your list the day before?

But it's not a simple sim. It's a couple. You can protect guys once the season is over. There are opportunities.

Checking the export tracker right now and 19 of 24 teams have already exported for tomorrow.

None of those 19 should have unprotected players they want to protect. If they do, it's their own fault.

And look, I get it that we all have lives and things happen. But if you can't keep up with the league, why are you in it? It's a serious question. We have had guys booted from the BLB for not exporting routinely.

I don't want anyone here to get booted from the league. I like hating you guys. But, if it's the off season and you can't grab a couple minutes to protect your players, then you shouldn't be in a league that requires you protect your players. That's just reality. You can't argue against that.

Yeah, this I get and I think this happened to someone recently.

And if you're good enough at posting, you can always just use that excuse: "Why is my guy available for the Rule 5? I protected him!"

Lol, just remember this conversion in 2006 when Manster is unprotected and ends up causing a major stir.

Again, this won't happen in Pawtucket. Knowing we are heading into another offseason wanted to put some thought into this whole Rule Five issue.
