I will mention a few FA signings I do like...
OF Yidir Adili to Pittsburgh - I was afraid to commit to the veteran long-term when I signed him but I have to applaud Wetts for taking the risk. Adili killed it for me this past season and will likely only hit better in the Millers park. Plus, with the DH option, the old man doesn't have to defend left field every game.
IF Clarence Wetton to Los Alamos - If you don't look at his age (38), and just look at his ratings, defense and production, Wetton still has it. Last year, he hit about league average (103 OPS+) but was a plus defender at 2B and 3B.
SP Nakazo 'Chuckwagon' Sasaki to Maine - Again, if you don't look at his up coming 40th birthday, Sasaki is still a solid player. An innings eater, leader and a lefty. He had an amazing season for me in 2000 and an OK season for the Millers in 2001. But if you look at his splits, he was twice as good on the road when leaving the park in Pittsburgh.
SP Kel "Fuckin" Murphy to Indy - You know I love this signing. If you a got a defense behind him, Murphy can be a solid back-end starter. For less than $1M? Oh yeah. He'd still be in D.C. if he hadn't demanded like $6M per to re-sign.
IF Clint Johnston to Windy City - Yes, a 5th former Bat. Dude can't really hit anymore but to get a defensive wiz who can play all infield spots at a DWI level and enough speed to be a solid pinch run option for less than $1M? I like it.
A few signings that I'm not so sure about...
C Jerry Craig to Los Alamos - In 1998, Los Alamos traded for Washington catcher, Mike Murdock. In 1999, they traded for Washington Triple-A catcher, Doug Bolam. In 2000, they traded for Washington catcher Artie Walker. In 2001, they Rule V drafted Washington Triple-A catcher, Artie Irvin. And then they spend $13M on catcher, Jerry Craig. Who hasn't played in the BLB since 1999 and has only played in over 80 BLB games in a single season, once, in 1997.
OF Pancho Alveraz to Los Alamos - Not to pile on the Bandits, but I don't get this signing. Alveraz used to be a big time slugger. But over the past three seasons, he has OPS'd about .720ish. That's not bad, but they signed him to a $38M deal, which makes him the second highest paid player on the Bandits. When you consider that OF FA's Chet Walton and Julian Rivera are probably good for about a .700ish OPS and they signed for a fraction of the cost, kind of a head scratcher. Alveraz did hit better in the 2nd half but that's a lot of money.
Indy signing three SPs - None are signed long-term...none are expensive...but three veteran SPs on a team that looks to already have five SPs who aren't going anywhere. Competition is never a bad thing, and you have to make offers when you are unsure of who will sign, but seems like at least one, if not all, might not even make the roster out of Spring Training.
