Baltimore Wins Lottery for 1B Reyes
Monday, February 26th, 2001: A wave of jubilation swept over Baltimore today as fans and team officials celebrated the signing of Ismael Reyes.
Despite the fact that the Baltimore Bulldogs will have to pay out $27,920,000 over 2 years, he will certainly draw fans to the park. Let's just hope they don't crank up ticket prices!
In his 1185-game career, Reyes has hit at a .264 clip and collected 1153 hits with 284 doubles, 27 triples, 234 homers, and 841 RBIs.
We finally signed Hack Wells. It took some negotiating and an extra year, but we got our #3 hitter.
I've always liked this guy. I just never wanted to give Jistic anything to get him.
He has some pop, he's incredibly durable throughout his career. His bat might be slowing down now that he's 33, but it seems most of these catchers don't lose it till they reach the 35/36 age. So I'll take 2-3 years of his usual production before he falls off a cliff in years 3 and team option 4.
We spent $41 MM this off season to fill in spots. Also brought in Knight to play LF, Loren Wallace to DH/OF, Chamissa to play DH/1B, Geoff Scott to play 1B/IF, and Boehmer to (sadly) become the Ace of a very young pitching staff.
At least for the staff we have Troy "It's better than Batavia, NY" Clark. Let's not kid, he's not a great arm or a good one, but he's improved every year and throws innings. I've given up on young arms too soon and maybe Clark turns a corner. I'm not expecting it, but I'd be damned if I let someone else experience it for themselves.
Does all of this do any good? I don't know. I do know that fan interest jumped from 53 to 76. For a team that drew under 2 million, that's good news.
If we can't win, at least the fans will see some guys they like.
Financially, we have some money and didn't hand cuff ourselves with long term deals. If things do continue to be bad, we'll be right in line for that early first round pick in 2004 (sigh).
At least we have some mid-first round picks this season, and the hope that Hartford is "rebuilding" enough this season for a early first round pick in 2002.
It's Denver. It's a mess. Slowly, but surely, it won't be anymore.
It's so weird seeing NYK instead of MIS. It will take me a while to get used to it. Anyway, not surprised to see that the Lager will be completitive again. Top to bottom, its the most balanced division in the league. The Porter has more top-end talent but I'll take our overall package.
