Putting the rookie Daniel Alvarez into the closer role is about the only smart decision I've made this year. 10 saves in July and August with only one blown save.

Dave just wants to know if they can get on base.

Washington Bats (76-41; 1st Place in Stout)

                    3-0 vs. Davenport
                    3-0 vs. Batavia

I love 6-0 sims. Sure, the Brawlers and Muckdogs are two of the worst teams in baseball but I'll take it! Here you go boys!

Best Game: After three innings, and giving up two homeruns, the Bats and SP Kel Murphy were down 3-1. Murphy settled down, giving up no runs the rest of the way, pitching through the 8th inning and the Bats strung together three consecutive one-run innings to win 4-3 against Batavia.

Worst Game: Eh...hard to find fault in an undefeated week but it took us 10 innings to beat Batavia in one of the games, 1-0. Upsetting that SP Travis DuFour pitched eight shutout innings, giving up just two hits, two walks and striking out eight, but didn't get a win.

                    The Good
-Now tied for the BLB lead in wins, SP Loren Washington is 15-0 after 5-0 win over Davenport. 8 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 4K, 0 ER. It's funny I'm paying Washington just $3,000,000 this season and paying SP Nakazo Sasaki $20,000,000, both acquired in Free-Agency. Not that Sasaki has been a bust, 9-7, 3.20 ERA 1.06 WHIP, including 8 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K in a 4-2 win over Batavia. But quite a difference in value for sure.

-A big reason why the Bats felt OK trading OF Shawn Burton was the emergence of youngster OF Toby Day. The 26-year-old is coming into his own, hitting righties and lefties very well and playing top notch corner OF defense. This year, .286/.368/.437/.805. He responded to the full-time starting week by getting a hit in all six games.

-The player acquired in the Burton deal, IF Clarence Wetton made his D.C. debut in a big way. In his debut game, against the Brawlers, Wetton went 2/3, R, RBI, 2 BB. He wasn't happy about the trade but I think his morale should change on a winning team. He will play some 2B, some 3B and be a great depth option behind a (now) deep infield.

                    The Bad
-I'm probably done starting SP Ivan Gutierrez. Sometimes guys just need a change of scenery and I feel his time is up. I made a post recently in the waiver/trade block thread but even if he isn't dealt before the deadline, he will head to the middle relief and mop-up. That means there is an open spot in the rotation. I have a few candidates in Triple-A dying for a shot, but I think this week I will try P Tom Downs. Acquired from Philly in the Marv Bowers trade two years ago, he has flourished in the pen this year after struggling in '99 as a starter. His third pitch is awful which doesn't bode well but has been a multiple innings RP all season long and I think he deserves another shot in the rotation.

                    The Ugly
-When you go 6-0 and don't gain one game in the division, you know you are in the Stout.

                    The Farm
-After struggling in their rookie debuts earlier this year, OF BJ Jobe and 3B Tyler McLouth have been lighting Triple-A pitching on fire. In the month of August they are hitting at a 1.027 and .894 OPS, respectively. Both, I expect, to be starters at the BLB level next year and both are likely to be called up for depth in September but with the way they are hitting now, they might even make the Playoff Roster.

                    The Week Ahead
-Traveling to the DL has never been good for Washington. Not the easiest matchups this year, either. Three @ New Orleans. Three @ Mississippi. The Dukes have won eight of their last ten and swept the last time they had a homestand. The Storm have won six of ten but have recently been bit by the injury bug. A week after Curt Dodson goes down, Deron Ryan and Adrian Romero follow. Pretty fortunate time to be playing the Storm I guess. Prediction: 1-2 @ New Orleans, 3-0 @ Mississippi.

Meh...platooning for handedness wins Reg Season games, but you need a best lineup in this league with the 7day sims. In every one of my title runs, I did it with a set 8 starters. Stars and Scrubs, Boys.

I would have to agree. Ask Delandis about Jeremiah Kelly in the post-season.

It's good to platoon in the regular season but you have to play your best guys in the playoffs.

Had nothing to do with the 7 HOF on the squad of course.
