Hartford went 1-6. We're now just one back in the Ale.

      Gutierrez returns this sim.

We also extended a couple guys in our bullpen.

Washington Bats (60-31; 1st Place in Stout)

                1-0 @ Batavia
                0-3 @ Los Alamos
                3-0 @ Windy City

A 4-3 sim is solid, especially with Virginia going 3-4. I guess I now know the pain of being swept. Damn. Glad we immediately responded by sweeping the Playboys in the Windy City. So...here ya go, Jistic!

Best Game: A 2-0 shutout to close out the SIM, led by SP Travis DuFour's seven scoreless innings.

Worst Game: Down 2-0 in the series to Los Alamos, the Bats get swept in the final game by losing 5-6 in extras.

                The Good
-Mentioned above, DuFour, is the "Best Bats Pitcher You've Never Heard Of." On the year, the second year starter is 10-3, 2.54 ERA and 1.14 WHIP after pitching 14.2 innings and giving up just one earned run in his two starts this week.

-Happy Birthday OF Shawn Burton! He's officially off the trading block after this week. He hit a homerun in every single game against the Playboys, in a stadium that is .929 for lefty hitters HR and .925 lefty hitters AVG. In his last seven games, he has four homeruns, four runs scored, eight RBI and two walks. On 7/14/2000 his OPS was .638. It is now .699 at 7/24.

-SP Loren Washington might win the Pale Ale if he isn't careful. After a 7 IP, 2 ER, 7-2 win over Windy City, he is now 11-0 with a 2.24 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. Ironfist is having the best statistical season but if Washington finishes the year 20-0 and Herrera finishes 12-9 (what he is on pace for), it would be interesting.

                The Bad
-SS Shawn Nolan has a stiff neck and has will be day-to-day for a four games, including two this week that he will rest for.

                The Ugly
-Getting swept by Los Alamos, our likely first-round opponent.

                The Farm
-I honestly believe my Triple-A team could beat Batavia and Denver in a three-game series. There are a few Four-A types on the squad but almost the entire pitching staff is in their early to mid-20's.

                The Week Ahead
-Three @ Philadelphia. Four vs. Wilmington. I like the match-ups this week and the three game winning streak we are on leaving Chicago. I do however face Pete Fitzgerald and Doug Miles, but I'll say, 2-1 @ Philly and 3-1 vs. Wilmington and their new makeshift rotation.

I'd go with Pancho, Vleugel, Fitz and Dewitt before I'd even consider Washington. The guy only has 104 IP and 3.84 FIP. Sounds like a small sample size mixed with good defense and a pitchers park to me.

Obviously if he manages to go 20-0, he'll likely win.

Not many bright spots as we continue to await the next scouting update.

                          Few good things.

Jamie Herberholtz is on the best run of his career. Since June first the big kid from Okie is 4-1 with a 1.77 ERA with a WHIP of 1.07 striking out almost a batter an inning.

Big Jon also has 11 HR's in that same time span.

Antonio Citron is also having the best few months of his young career as he auditions for a future bench job.

On the farm we keep pluggin along. Top hitting prospect JJ Caplan is unfazed by his promotion to AA and is tearing it up. He'll stay there likey til next June.

Liam Ingle had a big week in A ball as he starts making a case for promotion himself. We're waiting on a scouting update before we move him

Demo looks solid in AAA but he'll be there til spring training 2002.

W/L is the very last criterion I use for something like this. Impressive yes, but should that catapult him over players that have better performances in the more relevant statistical markers?

                            I'm not so sure.

Gus Jenkins had three 2 loss seasons including a 20-2 and a 17-2... never really got a sniff at winning the Pale Ale. W/L is what it is.
