-Another position that I don't normally like to profile is first base. However, I am more apt to give a little "shine" to guys who are TRUE late round picks like Pat Silvia. Silvia began his amateur career playing after his family moved from the sweltering heat of Louisiana to the frigid cold of Maine. As the move was unusually sudden and very late into his junior year, Silvia didn't play much as a junior. As a full-time starter his senior year, Silvia played very well and was drafted in the 5th round by the Playboys organization.

After spending the next 3 years in Janesville (CHI-A), Silvia finally got his chance to move AA ball. Fast forward to 2002, Silvia is in Des Plaines (CHI-AAA)hitting well above .300 with an OPS+ of 186. Silvia will get a chance soon in Chicago. We know the kid has real talent, but with all of the talent in the Windy City minors, will this kid even get a chance?

Wasn't expecting this but good choice.

Silvia has been a guy that my scouts never really liked in their verbiage but ratings wise showed promise. I felt since A ball that he would develop a little bit and he has both in ratings and production. I was very suprised however at how well he's responded in AAA ball.

He'll get his cup of coffee either in Sep or spring training.

-Orlando was drafted in the 5th round of the 2001 draft but recently, making a name for himself as if he were a 1st round selection. An international prospect from our southern neighbors, Orlando is only 19, but already entering his 3rd season as a seasoned professional. As a young high school star in Mexico, Gonzales hit a sizzling .473, an amazing 1.289 OPS, and stole 23 bases.

Fast forward to 2002 and his 2nd year in the BLB minor leagues, Orlando started to hit his stride hitting .279 on the year, with an impressive enough .375 OBP. At the beginning of this season, the 19 year old was hitting .375 in Single A ball, earning a Walker League Player of the Month Award and a promotion by the Wilmington Organization.

Working off natural talent alone, the only thing that can stop Gonzales is himself. He's been known to rally a team together with a great personality and a desire to win, but there have been rumors that Gonzales does not put in the time to be the player he is truly capable of becoming. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

Carr sitting at 4 in the prospect list is down and out for the year.

Villafane is showing eye popping fielding at AAA 284 innings strong and no errors. Nice range also. He is just about ready for the show. Cannot believe he has not cracked the top 100

-When he was selected in the 3rd round by Pawtucket in the 2000 draft, Lupe knew he had no chance of making a meteoric rise to the BLB. Lupe was not the best high school player, but the front office in Pawtucket must've liked his potential. Lupe learned to throw 5 good pitches and over his high school career, learned to keep the ball low and make it tough on mashers to get the ball out of the park.

Very competitive, Frevert spent his first 2 1/2 years in Single A balland after a stellar start to 2003, was promoted to AA this year. So far Lupe has only given up 1 home run this year in nearly 100 IP. With Pawtucket's promotional record, it may be a while but keep your eye on this guy.

How Fat Bastard's little brother beats out the 1B Shane Solum Month of May story is beyond me. His lines were .347/.414/.683 with 8 2B, 1 3B, 8 Hrs. I'm sensing some homo-ish favoritism here.
