  • DelPrez's Monthly Minor League (Late Round) Players to Watch

We'll see how long this lasts, but every (BLB) month I'm going to try and write a short blurb about under-the-radar players who have a chance to make an eventual impact in the BLB despite being drafted late (or going undrafted). To be considered a late draftee, the player must have been drafted 3.15 or later (arbitrary guesstimate to about where the talent starts to drop in the draft), served minimal time in the BLB and be under 29 years old. The minimum IP will be 15 IP to be eligible or 75 AB.

Since I've got a little extra time to waste tonight (my new Friday night job as a newborn pillow while mommy is at work), I'll even back track to the beginning of the year. Feel free to comment as I'll just keep this as an ongoing thread (if I can). If there is someone you'd like to nominate as the season progresses, feel free to PM me and I'll see what I can do.

I'll have the first two guys (April and May) up in a bit.

    April 2000 DMLLP Award Winner

    Nick Cortes (SP)
    AAA-Richmond Rams (WAS)
    OSA: 4-4-4 | 4-4-5

-At 6'5, 210 lbs, there is no question that Cortes has the physical tools to play at the big league level. Undrafted in the 1997 draft, Washington took a low risk chance with Cortes, signing him 3 days after the draft. Cortes really started to show a bit of promise his 2nd year as a professional, tossing a 1-hit shutout against the Myrtle Beach Shorebirds (AA) with 10 K and just 1 BB in August of 1998. Cortes stayed in AA for the entire 1999 season, throwing another 1-hit shutout against the Richmond Riot (AA) in May 1999.

Fast forward to the new millennium, and Cortes was nearly unhittable at the AA level in April. Going 3-0 in 4 starts with a nasty .58 ERA with 30 strikeouts and just 3 BB, Cortes earned AA Mash Pitcher of the Month Award. In response to this impressive performance, Cortes was promoted to the AAA level club, continuing to impress and may likely be seen at the BLB level sooner than later.

    Honorable Mention:
    Loui-Gabriel Trahan (AA-BAT)
    Goro Morinaga (AA-PAW)
    Artie Waters (AA-CAL)

-Drafted in the 8th round of the 1997 draft by the Los Lunas Organization, this Puerto Rican switch hitter has loads of potential according to OSA. Despite having a pretty strong arm, Flores played 1B in Puerto Rico. The Los Lunas staff has been working hard with Flores to expand his comfort zone to be able to play 3B as well.

After batting .333/.383/.400 in the month of April, Flores topped that perfomance batting .360 in the month of May with 4 doubles nad 10 RBI. OSA expects Flores to have a bit more power, which to date hasn't show up but he is only 22 and still has a few years to develop. Unfortunately for Flores as of 5/26/2000, Flores was diagnosed with quad injury and will have to watch from the sidelines for the next six weeks. Either way, Flores looks like another diamond in the rough to keep an eye on.

      Honorable Mention:
      Joey Bailey (AA-MOR)
      Jermaine Taylor (AA-DEN)
      Alex Cabrera (AA-VIR)
      Alex Aguirre (AAA-DAV)

              Wilmington Outfielders

Weston Day looks to become the 3rd in a line of outfielders picked in the first round who have become busts.

Ferreria and Linsemann (not sure where he is ; FA I think) the past two.

That is why Ted Carr was such a risk to me. Getting gun shy.

                Awesome work, Prez.

I really wish Waters had 5 control... I think he'd be a solid pitcher in the BLB.

BTW, that's a BIG DUDE. 6'5, 260. Its like you've got Charles Barkley out there on the mound. But I'm sure he'll do well enough one of these days to get a monthly spotlight.

He's definitely a Top 10 AA pitcher of all time.

... Not that, that's much of an achievement.
