Extra inning games have become a mainstay again in Virginia. Went so deep on Monday vs Batavia, Effrain "Gadget" Gray had to catch 6 innings and bat three times. Plus side, he's sitting on a 10.50 Range. #GoldGlove
2-5 Swept by Mississippi 3-0. Split with Syracuse 2-2. 26-25 Overall. 4 GB of Indianapolis
Not a good week. I feared the match ups in this one and was right to be worried.
The biggest concern is this first matchup. We've benefitted from playing at home for most of the early schedule. This time we were on the road for the three-game set and offense was stagnant.

Mississippi 2, Denver 0
So much for an improving offense. Jermaine Lewis pitched a complete game one-hitter. The struggling Cy Gray picked up the lone hit, a double in the 1st. Kel Brown flew out and Rex Morgan grounded out to end Denver's only rally.
Bollati pitched well again. 7.2, 2 Runs. A lot of walks (6) for a finesse pitcher, but nonetheless a tough loss to drop him to 3-4.

Mississippi 2, Denver 1
Norm Sutton continues to roll through the DL giving up one run over 8 innings in this one.
Ole Mens was effective, but lost his first game of the year (4-1). He gave up 2 runs (1 unearned) in 6 innings. Marv Goodman hit his 17th double and 6th home run. Cy Gray had another hit.

Mississippi 6, Denver 1
And so this ends an anemic series for Denver. Troy Clark gave up 2 earned runs (5 runs total) and moves to 3-5.
Cy Gray is picking it up a bit with another 2 hits. But outside of doubles by Melson, Morgan and Hector Gonzalez, the offense couldn't generate enough hits to score runs against Deron Ryan.

Denver 8, Syracuse 1
Finally, a win. Kel Brown had a strong series against Syracuse and it started here with his 11th home run in the first. Denver brought home 6 men in the first, making it out of reach early.
Zack Mueller - who has pitched at home in every start this season - continued his great performance in Rocky Top going 7.2 innings, surrendering 1 run before handing the ball to Eddy Hernandez.

Syracuse 6, Denver 2
The Slammers bounced right back against Fitzgerald. After cruising through 4, they tagged him for five runs in the fifth, ending his day.
Chip Snow was his normal effective self against the Bulls, giving up just one earned run in 7 innings.

Denver 9, Syracuse 1
The Bulls' offense responded with Lindsey on the mound. Chuck pitched a one-run complete game (his first complete game since 1996) in the 9-1 victory.
Cy Gray continued his good week scoring 3 runs and collecting 2 hits. Hector Gonzalez hit a double and drove in a run. And Kel Brown his hit 12th home run of the year.

Syracuse 12, Denver 1
This see-saw of a series saw Syracuse close it out with a beat down of Denver's pitching staff. Bollati went less than 7 innings for the first time in six starts and dropped to 3-5 on the year despite a respectful 3.64 ERA and 1.31 WHIP.
Kel Brown hit home run #13, but that was it for Denver. Ivan Martinez shut down the rest of the offense while Ignacio Rodriguez was 2-6 with 3 RBI and a two-run shot.
Overall a poor week for the Bulls. With the Clowns performing high, the Bulls missed on an opportunity to capitalize and dropped to 4 games back of Indianapolis. A few costly errors also pushed the team defense to 2nd, though even Syracuse's barrage of runs in the last game of the series didn't hurt the Team ERA - still 2nd in the DL.

Reason: Made some formatting adjustments. Will make better ones for the next sim.
Baltimore Bulldogs: 4-3 (28-23, 12 GB in Porter, 1st in WC)
Most of the time, I'd be disappointed going 4-3 in a 7-game week. However, pulling out the sweep against Wilmington felt like good revenge for them sweeping us earlier in the year. Also, despite going 1-3 against the New Colonials, I was pleased to see that we were in every game.
The Good
-Slow Starters: After a forgettable April we've turned it around, with the potential to 18-10 for the month, and in the month with the 3rd best record in the IL during the Month of May.
-TMIM in the BLB: I picked up LMR in the trade not only to make the salaries work, but also when Kyoden Kubota inevitably gets hurt at the end of this season. Unfortunately (because injuries are never fortunate, right?) Pat Marlin who was hitting well to start the season went down with a broken ankle. Little to my surprise, all he would do is hit .362 with a 1.210 OPS, 6 home runs, with 17 RBI and make it too dangerous to pitch around Rex. Now that's interesting.
-Who's Not A #1: Ignado Sanchez has been darn good this month as well going 3-0 in 4 starts with a 2.08 ERA and 21 K and just 5 BB. He may not be a #1 but he is sure playing the part this month.
-New Life In Baltimore: Curt Dodson may have found the fountain of youth in Baltimore. In his first week he went 6-12 with one home run and 3 RBI. Next week we'll check out how he does as an every day starter.
The Bad
-Who's Not A #1: Derek Vleugel has somehow forgotten how to sit down batters. So far this season, he's 1-1 with a 6.25 ERA and a WHIP over 2.00. The kid is working up high pitch counts and walking guys that he would've struck out last year. I guess the silver lining is that his performance can really only go up from here.
Up Next
More inter divisional play with 2 @ Batavia, 2 @ Philly before we finish the week at home vs. the Juggernauts.
I don't expect him to hit well. I know he won't. But I did expect him to continue being patient.
He hasn't even done that. With Philadelphia last year he hit .214 (.215 in 1999) in 117 At-bats (121 in 1999) and had a .370 OBP. In 1999 that OBP is .309. That's awful. Just downright awful.
All I wanted was defense and walks. He's got the defense part right, but as of now, his lack of patience is killing me in the lead off spot. This guy has a career .380 OBP. I'm just hoping he's in a funk.
