    Dallas @ Los Lunas
    Regular Season 6-6

Dallas Offense: The start of the season saw the Snappers and Storm swap Finley Kinsey's aging mega contract for Mel Woodbury's aging mega contract. And though he's been ageless at 41, Woodbury was no Kinsey this season. Future Hall of Famer, Dani "Steady" Alvarez hasn't shown any drop off posting a .300/.397/.507, 30 HR and 107 RBI campaign at the age of 37. Unfortunately for Dallas, there hasn't been much offensive support for either Woodbury or Alvarez, as the Snappers struggle to score runs - 9th in the DL.

Los Lunas Offense: They've been dubbed Brothers from Anotha Motha in the LL clubhouse, and for good reason. OF's Ramao Cavades and Donnie Small have eerily similar games. Sitting in the middle of the Javelinas lineup, what Cavades and Small lack in batting average, they make up for in power, speed, run production and defense. With 60 homeruns, 25 SBs and 184 RBIs between them, the dynamic duo is the energy source for the Furry Pig offense. A solid supporting cast of Willie Maddox, Nesty Garcia, Curt Knight, Hector Gonzalez, Ryu Taniguchi and Clarence Wetton propelled Los Lunas to #3 in runs scored in 1998.

Advantage: Los Lunas - Alvarez and Woodbury are Hall of Famers, but Cavades and Small have a much better table set in front of them

Dallas Rotation: Built around superstar Pat Dimmick, the Snappers are always dangerous in any series where Dimmick takes the mound twice, or even possibly, 3 times. After Dimmick, there's a significant drop off in the rotation. May acquisition Caden Hill (BAL) posted a 7-6 record and a 3.84 ERA in 24 games as a Snapper, while Curt Tanner (BAT) hasn't played as well, registering an ERA of 5.00 and a 4-8 record in the DL. Dallas best bet as a #2 is converted reliever Armando Ureste. Ureste went 9-12 with a 3.58 ERA in 29 starts, despite only throwing a fastball and a slider.

Los Lunas Rotation: Neron Rosado, Colt Wade, Heriberto Melendez...who are these guys? Ask most fans outside of Los Lunas to name the best starting pitcher on the Javelinas and you might get the name of Willie Harrison who was the #8 overall pick in 1992. While Harrison has begun to round himself into one of the better picthers in the DL, it's those three other guys who have consistently pitched the team to success. If you're LL, you most likely hand the ball to Melendez in a game 7, but you'd be pretty comfortable with either Rosado or Harrison pitching a pivotal playoff game.

Advantage: Los Lunas - Dimmick is the prototypical superstar pitcher, but LL has 4 quality guys that can fill out a playoff rotation.

Dallas Bullpen: Allstars Daniel Romero and Dae-hee Yi anchor a bullpen that has regressed in 1998. On nights when Dallas can go with a plan of Dimmick to Romero to Yi, the Snappers have a great chance to win the game. When the ball is handed to the rest of the pen, things can get dicey.

Los Lunas Bullpen: JJ Black is one of the most dominant closers of the 90s. His 280 saves and 1.63 ERA speaks for itself. Add in Abayghar Tulun and Ruben Pineda's sub 2.00 ERA's and it's the recipe for the 2nd best bullpen in the DL.

Advantage: Los Lunas - Injuries have thinned out the Pig Pen, but the core is there when the playoff strings are tightened.

Dallas Injuries: Much needed MR Colm Chambers will miss the playoffs with a shoulder issue. Starting SS Zack Richardson, who came over in the Baltimore deal with Hill, is on the shelf as well. Utility OF Rod Miners will also miss the playoffs.

Los Lunas Injuries: Losing SP Don Davis and MR David Leyva for 6 weeks apiece is a blow. Leyva is another burgeoning bullpen star, who would have been a vital piece of LL's playoff pen. CF Artie Dickerson's late season injury significantly reduces the Javelinas OF depth and will most likely force Small into CF, where he only appeared 15 times.

Advantage: Dallas - Chambers and Richardson's absence hurts the Snappers, but Leyva is the better reliever and missing Dickerson changes the OF alignment of Los Lunas significantly.

Prediction: Los Lunas in 6. Dimmick wins both starts, but Big D struggles to score runs. A more balanced rotation, dominant bullpen, Cavades and Small power the Pigs into round 2.

    New Orleans @ Hartford
    Regular season 4-8

New Orleans Offense: A rising star in his own right, count CF Lonnie Johnston as someone who feels fortunate to hit between established veterans Don O'Finegan, Von Haynes, and Loren Wallace. The young OF continues to impress his veteran teammates with his abilty to hit for power and average. Haynes, at 34, defies logic from the C position. In a season where most predicted he would start to decline, he hit .317, OBP'ed .428, blasted a career high 27 homers, drove in 87 runs, and scored 95 times as the heart of a team that hit an astonishing 173 bombs.

Hartford Offense: On Monday, the Whalers announced Pancho Alvarez as team MVP. Acquired in the preseason from Denver, Alvarez rebounded from a replacement level 1997 to hit .308/.390/.455 with 19 HR 93 RBI and 86 runs scored in 1998. Alvarez was the offensive stabalizer, playing 157 games and batting everywhere from leadoff to fifth in a line-up that had Hartford desperately covering for injuries all season. Add Alvarez to Hartford's superstar core of Chuck Durham and Amri Sau, mix in solid roleplayers like Wes Hawkins, Abe Hernandez and Don Castor, hire mercenaries like McCarthy, O'Fallon and Ednams, and it's a recipe for one of the better line-ups in the BLB.

Advantage: Draw - Hartford's line-up is built around a high BA and OBP. New Orleans is built for the long ball. Both feature balance throughout their line-up and have the ability to impact the game anywhere in the order.

New Orleans Rotation: If Pat Dimmick is #1 in the DL, he needs to slide over because Triple Crown winner RJ Curtis is #1A. Curtis had a monster season: 19 wins, 1.75 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 229 Ks. Like Dimmick, Curtis alone can win a series. Unlike Dimmick, there's a Robin to Curtis' Batman in Alex Martinez. A-Mart, 16-10 with a 3.38 ERA, is a reliable #2 playoff option for the Dukes and gives them a formidable 1-2 punch. Seika Sumita, Jin-Soo Baik and Stu Driscoll round out a competent playoff rotation.

Hartford Pitching: 27 year old Wence Hautbourg was acquired in May during the Great Batavia Fire Sale for a King's Ransom. The goal at the time was to give Hartford another frontline jackhammer for the Colonial Boulder in the middle of Championship Highway. Unfortunately, Hautbourg has become injury insurance for playoff hero and ace Chuck Lindsey. Raul Gonzalez still sits quietly in teal atop the Hartford rotation, while New Brew Ricky Rangel and runner-up Tony Marrero solidify the middle of the rotation. Lefty Allstar Brad Hayes returned late in the season and has pitched well and adds depth to the rotation.

Advantage: New Orleans - The Whaler's playoff rotation will be more balanced, but the Dukes have a better 1-2 punch in the God-like Curtis and demi-god Alex Martinez.

New Orleans Bullpen: Where have you been Yoshio Yoshida? Seemingly missing since 1995, Yo-Yo bounced back with a superb 1998. 41 saves and a 1.61 ERA had Crescent City brass glad they didn't ship out the heavily shopped Japanese righty. Yoshio headlines a capable and well-rounded bullpen unit that features lefties Glen Harrington and Geoff Jenkins, along with Jerry Murdock, Scot Everhart and Doug Hill.

Hartford Bullpen: Tim Godron is an enigma that maddens Hartford's fanbase, coaches and front office. He was maginificent as a rookie starter in 1992-1993, before an injury forced him into a bullpen role. Last season, the Hartford faithful were ready to banish him to a rebuilding team after single handedly blowing the Brewer's against Virginia as the closer. If it wasn't for Jared Kirby, Godron would be lonely headlining as a Championship Caliber goat. 1998 saw Godron bounce back in a set-up role, leading a competent bullpen that is deep on experience, in ERA. Hartford, for the fourth time in four seasons, rolls out a playoff bullpen that features Godron, along with battle tested relievers Hector Anaya, BT Ching, Mac Aaron, and Anibel Valencia.

Advantage: Hartford - Aaron, Anaya, Ching, Godron. They're battle tested in the playoffs with no possible playoff situation out there they've yet to encounter. The potential to implode is always there and has been a bug-a-boo the last few seasons, but the pen is full of playoff established, high quality veterans.

    New Orleans Injuries: None.

Hartford Injuries: Sau, Durham, Hernandez, and now, Chuck Lindsey have all fallen victim to the Whaler Playoff Injury Curse. Lindsey was having a career year at 33, with a 9-4 record and 2.30 ERA before his shoulder flared up. Add surprising SP Brad Sanford to the DL for the playoffs with a torn labrum in the last week of the season.

Advantage: New Orleans - No injuries. 'Nuff said.

Prediction: Hartford in 7. This series can go either way. Do Curtis and A-Mart win 2 apiece? Does Haut have any playoff moxy? Can the underrated Ra-Go outduel a superior Curtis once? Are Durham-Alvarez-Sau better than O'Finegan-Haynes-Johnston? Which Godron do you get? Is Yoshida the 1996-97 version or the 1998 version in his first playoffs? Hartford's experience and HFA edges out New Orleans exceptional WC run.

Thanks. NO-HAR has that legendary type potential. A Curtis vs Dimmick 2nd round could be epic though.
