In other news...somehow Olivo went from off the Top 20 to 8th. Interesting things. Not sure what is causing these sudden changes in expectations from him.

No offense taken. It's weird. He pitched well in his two starts, but not enough to jump at least 13 spots.

I wish I cared enough to really take the time to understand those things.

With the news that Hanrahan will hang them up after this season (at 43!), I think it only makes sense to compare him to other closers converted to starters after turning 30.

And so I start with one of the most successful ones: Marlton Carlton.

The Good
Another poor performance week but with all of the infighting in the Porter we somehow still remain in first place. Our pitching remains pretty solid as Lonnie Fowler, Derek Vleugel, and Wade Coates all remain at 80% or above on QS%. Last outing, Vleugel threw 9 K, 0 BB, 0 ER, and just 3 hits allowed.

The Bad
We aren't generating enough consistent offense, but hopefully getting Everado Gremades back in the swing of things will have the same effect that he did last year. It also looks like Sze Zhu has finally found his swing as well and may find himself ahead of a certain 17M Dollar Man if he doesn't at least pick up his OBP.

The Ugly
We can't win when our two biggest stars hit sub-.200. Both Rex Knight and Kyoden Kubota hit terribly this past week. The two stars connected on a combined 6/42. The worst part is that they hit 3rd and 4th in the order most of the time.

The Minors
Former 3rd round selection, Oscar Lerma, had an outstanding week. Lerma, who was just moved to Annapolis (AAA) this year, hit .417 for the week with only 5 K's. Lerma may be our next first baseman, so we will watch his progress very closely.

6-1 sim, swept Indy and Los Angeles while splitting a two game set with New Orleans. Kinsey is murdering the ball right now and rookie Alex Mejia already has 5 wins in this young season. My pitchers are all pitching better than last year and I think a lot has to do with not having black holes in the field like Jarred Good or Woodbury. Overall, hopefully we can continue to stay above .500. That's my only goal this year.

Carlton and its not as close as some might think.

Carlton was a big time underrated Closer because he spent his golden bullpen years on a bad Virginia team.

Was he as good a closer as Hanrahan? No. Not at his bet. But the gap wasn't as big as this one...

Carlton was the best Pitcher in the IL for a very productive stretch in DC. Hanrahan, conversely, has been good, but I think he gets kind eyes for being old and the former Closer thing.

What I like about Hanrahan is what he's doing after 39. Just amazing.

Carlton obviously has the best four-year stretch. I don't think it's as simple as saying he had the best career. "Not even close" I think is severely underrating what Hanrahan has done.

If I had known he had another decade in him I would've never traded him. I thought moving him to starter would end his career earlier, not extend it.

Just use an awesome 7-day lineup...they solve all your problems. And if he's D2D and then blows out his knee just blame it on the manager.
