  • Draft Pick Compensation

I'd like to re-open the discussion on whether we should draft pick compensation, or not. It doesn't work in the game as we're used to in MLB. Major differences are:

    - There are no sandwich picks, teams receive a the signing team's actual pick. (Round is dependent on the FA's class, and how many other FA's the signing team has signed)
    - Teams receive compensation for players they might not even want (due to the lack of arbitration hearings for Free Agents)

    Our options are:
    - keep compensation as it works in the game.
    - develop a system that includes sandwich picks and arbitration and do it ourselves
    - scrap draft pick compensation altogether.

I don't like the way it works in game. From the leagues I've made I say scrap it.

While I do prefer draft pick compensation, the way it's implemented in the game is garbage, and developing a system sounds like it may be too much work.

I'm in favor of some form of draft pick compensation.

If we're going to do this, I vote for developing a system. The current (default) system blows from what I've seen in my little league at home.

If that's just not feasible, then I say scrap compensation (with regret) :(

Turns out I can't turn off draft pick compensation until the next offseason.

Any ideas on a system we could use to emulate how it works in MLB?

You could look at the VORP of a player and compare it to what the MLB gives for players of that quality.

                  How about this:

                  1) Before FA begins, teams can submit a list of their FA's that they're offering arbitration in the forums.
                  2) On the first day of FA the commish will enter a 1 year contract offer for 80% of their current salary, or 80% of their requested salary, whichever amount is lower. (80% being the minimum offer a team can make in MLB. Taking the lower amount to lessen the chances of a player accepting arbitration, since very few actually do . This might need tweaking)
                  3) Award picks to FA's that were offered arbitration but signed by other teams. I'm still trying to decide how this would work best, since the sandwich rounds could get confusing.

                    Other ideas:
                    - If a FA that was offered arbitration, hasn't signed with anybody by a certain date (think it's December something in MLB) offer a 1 year contract for a higher amount (120% of what they're looking for + initial offer /2 ?)
                    - teams can still negotiate with a player who is offered arbitration, just wont receive compensation if they sign elsewhere

Scratch this idea. In a test, it seems like some players refuse to negotiate with their team once they hit FA so I couldn't even offer the arbitration offers as commish.

I say any player that refused to negotiate with their existing team gets formally excommunicated, all their records get wiped, and they have to share a 1BR condo with Pete Rose and Barry Bonds.
