1998 Debut Thread

Time to fire it up. This year the Playboys debut the first of what we hope are many key players over the next few years that will help restore us back to relevancy. Our first debut couldn't be more fitting.


SP - Jamie Herberholtz

Herberholtz was the 8th overall pick from the 1995 draft. He debuted as the #7 overall prospect and has been in or around the top 10 ever since. He's spent a season at every level of the minors and been consistently dominant at every level, improving every step of the way.

He is viewed as the possible leader of what we hope is a dominant staff someday with top prospects Edgar Mejia, Tom "Demo" Oshman, and Damien Williams. Their time is still coming, Herberholtz's time is now. He's been an iron man flamethrower in his young career so far. He will not be returning to the minors no matter how bumpy his rookie season is.

He symbolizes the beginning of what team officials feel will be a rebirth of a franchise. A lot is riding on his shoulders as his debut may set the tone of the franchise for the next 10 years.

Not really a debut , but look for Lonnie Williams to have a break out season. In 556 career AB's he has 34 dingers and 119 rbi's. Hoping he exceeds those numbers this season. He was touted as a record-breaker at one point by my scout.

That's my question. He handled himself in the minors but that control scares me.

Then again, he might strike out so many hitters that it might not matter if he walks a guy every two innings.

I like Herberholz, though I hope he's terrible for Windy City. His control worries me quite a bit for a BLB pitcher right now.

Nothing to report in Carolina in terms of debuts. That'll come soon enough.

Adrian Prado - 2B

Prado was drafted in 2.18, 42nd overall in 1990. It's been a long time coming for the second baseman. He's never really tore up the minors but in the last two years, only 80+ games, he has hit very, very well at Triple-A. Prado will get a few starts this week at 2B after the trade of Rule V draftee Pat Wallace.

Tanner Bangle (SP/MR)

-Drafted #14 overall in the 1996 draft, Bangle is expected to do big things in Baltimore. Bangle has moved to #17 on the Top Recruits Board and is considered one of OSU's all-time best pitchers. Bangle helped the 1995 Beavers to a NCAA Championship and he has also pitched a 4-hit, 18 K shutout his senior year against the California Golden Bears. His control still needs some more work, so Bangle will initially start in the bullpen as a mop-up reliever but will likely get his first start in late May.

Angelo Barrios (OF)

-Drafted in 1995 as Baltimore's first overall pick, Barrios was drafted as the potential heir apparent to Loren Wallace. Extremely smart and a very hard worker, Barrios has exploded in his first month in AAA this year with a 1.061 OPS. With Pat Marlin struggling in his first month BLB play this year, Barrios has powered his way into getting some looks against right handed pitchers this year.

3B/SS Yong-koo Lim

48th overall in 1991. Lim has been a long time coming. Turned 25 in May. Scout finally has his current matching his potential of 6-3-2-4-5. My previous scout liked him a bit more, more similar to OSA 7-3-2-5-7. Has a little speed and is a solid defender at 3B/SS. At the time of the Pat Wallace to Philly trade, I knew I would use Lim in that role by the time the rookies got entered. I guess we will give this a try two weeks earlier. Lim will get three starts this week giving rest to Jeremiah Kelly, who can not hit lefty pitching for the life of him.
