  • 1998 Spring Training Position Battles

    I'm bored. Entertain me.

Who is battling for a spot?

Is there a rookie that might dethrone last year's starter?
Are there two players battling it out for a starting spot?
    What about a bench spot?
Who's in danger of being demoted, released, DFAed?

Actually the Blue Wave are hoping someone establishes them self on the mound.

Still offering Clay a solid 4th round pick for one of his hack pitchers.

The best I'd give you for a 4th is a package of Delmar Oyos and Simonne Bertetto.

Oh... and FYI... if I don't get uniforms from you by Opening Day... you're still the Wildcats.

          I got a few battles....

In the rotation: Don Bolton vs. Troy Hanback vs. Junior Rubio vs. Cy Pryor
Bolton and Hanback pitched very well in their two starts, Rubio and Pryor didn't get any starts this sim. Probably an uphill battle for them but they will get a shot.

RF vs. LHSP: BJ Parker vs. Toby Day vs. Shawn Burton
Parker got the starts this sim and went 2/24. Day will get the starts this sim. If neither emerges, Burton will start both ways.

Utility Infielder: Pat Wallace vs. Yong-koo Lim vs. Dennis Jarrett
Wallace is a Rule V, so he already has the upper hand. Lim and Jarrett will need to show more to force Wallace out if the organization.

Bullpen: Al Snyder vs. Geoff Warren vs. Gerard Champagne
Only got a spot for one...

            Have some also:

Starting pitching: Johnson vs Cosio. From what we saw in spring training, Cosio most likely starts the year off in AAA, but eventually expect to see Cosio push Johnson to a bullpen role or perhaps a 6 man rotation.

Bullpen: Jimmy Dedrick/ Fei-hsien Loong/ Shawn Lewis fighting for one RHP role.

CF- Jordan Gonzalez vs Ral Vlez. This spot most likely will some day be Jordan's, but might for now start in a AAA role unless he leaves us no choice but to leave him up.

We started with 36, but next sim down to 31 players. We seem to be treating the roster trimming like football.

There's a huge battle going on for the 3rd/4th and possibly 5th outfield spot. Rex and Bornstein already have their spots.

The leader, despite his poor play so far in ST, is Pat Marlin. The way he played in the playoffs last year he has pretty much earned the #3 spot.

Behind him is Alex Gomez. We've been waiting for Gomez to play to his ratings for 3 years now. He's not showing too much in ST.

That 5th spot is still being considered at the moment, but if it were to happen, its a tough pick between speedy veteran, Geoff Southerland and the young prospect, Nagisa Kobayashi. Both are knocking the cover off the ball trying to earn a spot.

If Alex doesn't watch it, he may find himself back in Annapolis.

I've got three, maybe as many as five SP's battling for two spots in my rotation. Odds-on favorites are Rookie Tom Stolarik and old timer Alex Gonzalez. Neron Rosado did OK in his first ML season, but I don't see much room for improvement. Roman Duratny might get his first look-see this spring. We'll probably give Loic Chouinard another shot too.

You guys did good. I've been reading. Will comment on each battle as well. I've decided to spend the off days reading other teams since I spend so much on my own during sim days.

Not only did Pryor not get any starts this past sim, he didn't get any work period.

Bolton seems like he's out in front.

RF vs. LHSP: BJ Parker vs. Toby Day vs. Shawn Burton

Burton probably wins from experience and you knowing what you'll get? Not looking too easy of a decision with how poorly all three hit this sim.

Utility Infielder: Pat Wallace vs. Yong-koo Lim vs. Dennis Jarrett
Wallace is a Rule V, so he already has the upper hand. Lim and Jarrett will need to show more to force Wallace out if the organization.
Rule Vs make it tough. Jarrett and Lim have hit better but if you can stash them away for a year (especially when you don't expect to compete) then the choice is simple.

Bullpen: Al Snyder vs. Geoff Warren vs. Gerard Champagne
Only got a spot for one...
Better get Snyder and Champagne some work to prove their worth.
