If you're truly worried about hurting Gallahue, why not just keep him in the minors and sign a catcher? There are a couple BLB-capable options available, or just someone you aren't counting on helping in a couple seasons. Or, you could just move Davis- now that he's healthy- off the DL to play on the BLB squad, since he's not any kind of prospect.
Agreed with the man above. Why hurt your players development?
Surely you have triple A catchers. Promote one of them if they show no promise and fast promotion won't affect any plans. It doesn't seem you're expecting quality; just a body.
Or as I mentioned in your trade block, there isn't a catcher in free agency that interests you? I also just released a veteran defensive catcher from my minors. Not a hitter but he can play defense.
And I'm sure there will be others because we all had to release guys and will continue to.
Don't hurt your development. Just sign a stop gap.
Yeah, bad move. There are plenty of other, better as of now, catchers available in FA or trade that you can have for a cup of coffee for the rest of the year.
