I want to be Kohl's. Are there Kohl's everywhere? They were a customer at my last job. They call themselves a discount retailer, but their margins are 75-80%. Some say crooks... I say capitalists.

Bold prediction, but had I kept around Curt Race and Alex Torres, I'm a playoff team.

I'd say that's less bold prediction and more pure conjecture.

                        I don't disagree with Linty.

Small soapbox that is worthless to anyone but me....biggest mistake people make in this league is not having patience and sell too soon and to often. Same sellers and same buyers every season is not a coincidence.

At the same time, I think I got a very good haul for Torres and if the choice was between a close to .500 team and getting the #1 pick and a two Top 100 prospects for Torres, I'll probably always make that deal.

You can certainly make that case very easily.

Personally, I think a playoff run/spot is exponentially more valuable than even the #1 overall.

My personal take is that I think people abandon, not a season, but a direction/gameplan too soon. I think trading a guy pre or early Prime even on a bad team sets a franchise back. Especially if its your only one.

Not singling out anyone in particular. Just general assessment based on history.

Just my take, but I think the one of biggest mistakes is trading a guy too late. The value you lose can just be huge. It's just so difficult to determine when that time is.

I made sweeping changes last year, dealing guys like Knight, Gonzalez, Ortiz and even Mendez, but I'm cool with it. Each of them had a feature that concerned me, whether position vs. salary, stamina/role, or in the case of Knight, if he was declining.

Now with Knight, my scout loved him and I saw no drops, but he just wasn't the player I always felt he could be, and that was a warning sign for me. Obviously he doing really well in B-More, but how much of that is ballpark, no offense.

With Mendez, I thought he was done as a starter with a 3 stamina, but things are working out ok for him it seems. The alternative to dealing him was keeping a setup/closer guy around that would cost north of $5 MM a year. That just wasn't worth it under our current build.

Same for Ortiz. He wanted big $$$, and deservedly so, but that's not where I wanted my big $$$ guys at.

Different philosophies, I suppose, but always a great debate.

Certainly can't argue with that. There's most definately a window that you have to be conscious of.

My take, to expound a little, is that a lot of teams won't embrace a 5-year plan. I think long time owners find it easier, cause they know they're here for the long haul. I think newer guys think they have to build it on fast forward. 5 years in the BLB is 15 or 16 months. That seems like a long time, but I can tell you that 1982 (14 seasons ago) seems like last week.

I guess I just feel like the "art" to this game is developing over a period of time through patience. Sure you buy a FA here and there and sell them when you're bad, but its about identifying your core, your depth and your trade bait and build.

                                Just my take.
