  • 1996 HOF Voting

It's that time of year again. It's Spring Training and that can only mean one thing: roster crippling injuries suffered during meaningless games! Ok maybe two things then, injuries and Hall of Fame Voting.

Take your time, review the candidates and submit your ballots here. We need every owner to vote, even if you wish to submit a blank ballot.

Players must be named on 80% of the ballots in order to be inducted (20 of 24 if all teams submit). A player must receive 50% support in order to remain on next year's ballot if he fails to receive enough support for induction. (This year's holdovers are OF Subaru Hiraki, R PGrant Lewis, P Joe Ponte and RP Jon Cleary - for the 4th time).

Take a moment to review this year's potential class members and feel free to publicly discuss the merits of any player (discussion threads for each player can be found in the Awards/Hall of Fame subforum here. We've set a high bar for induction so no candidate's chances can be taken for granted.

The voting utility will remain open throughout ST and we'll close the polls once Opening Day is here next Wednesday giving everyone ample time to vote.

    Good luck gentlemen!

So just out of curiosity sake, what is the argument against Cleary? I'm curious what the justification is for not voting for him.

A combination of anti-reliever bias and new owners who never "saw" Cleary pitch.

Cleary has a higher career ERA+ than the closer who's already in the HoF. In addition to the fact that Cleary has a 2.37 career postseason ERA along with 10 saves and 2 rings. He's not going to get in again this season, but hopefully he'll stay on the ballot long enough for people to get a clue.

                8 Teams left to vote.

NOTE: If anyone voted on an incomplete ballot and would like a "RESET" let me know. The ballot you saw should have featured:
                Gorrie
                Harcourt
                Hiraki*

                Corrigan
                Nathan
                Van Slyke
                Cleary*
                Lewis*
                Ponte*

                * = Holdovers

                  Thanks. Vote is in.

I also gave the middle reliever a vote. He won't get in, but I think he did exactly what you want from someone bridging the gap between starter and closer. And he did it for his entire career.

Clearly we've been too agreeable lately so let me fix that.

I think Lewis deserves it before Cleary.

I don't like the ring argument. If Lewis was on Maine, he'd have those rings instead. If Lewis played for a team that could have taken him to the postseason, we don't know how good or bad his postseason numbers would have been.

So I'm ignoring post season performance when I vote. I simply don't care what someone did or what they earned in the post season. They should thank their 24 other teammates in my opinion.

Not saying Cleary wasn't a very good closer. I just think Lewis was better.

Joe Morgan is SO glad you weren't a HOF Voter.

Joe Morgan is one of the greatest 2B in MLB history. He didn't have to win rings to prove that.

Screw the Machine. He was a machine.

Please. He's the most overrated member of the Hall and is in 100% because of his rings.

I thought we were talking about Joe Morgan, not Phil Rizzuto.

                              Joe Morgan is a dick.

Anytime Ryne Sandberg was in a game he was "broadcasting" Joe would take every opportunity to knock on Sandberg, because people were so high on Sandberg as a HOF 2B and he was taking some of Joe's luster away.

So, when Ryno was inducted to the HOF, guess who wasn't in attendance? Yes sir, Joe Morgan. What a turd.
