  • BLB "What If..." #9

Need something to do till I can fix the SIM...

    SCENARIO:

You can go back and UNDO one move from your BLB History...what would you do?

Gotta be something you controlled. FA signing. Trade. Extension. Draft pick. Etc.

Can't UNDO an injury...that's not under your control (its under MY control). ;)

    Way too easy.

1984 and my first draft in the BLB. With the 13th pick in the draft, I pick this guy:

    instead of this guy:

Were you down to those two guys?

I mean, hindsight in terms of drafting is way too easy to just put down a guy who has boomed that got picked after you. But were you really down to just those two?

Scott was very high on a lot of my scouts list. I believe that we were still on the version that had multiple scouts at the time.

Ivan Garcia was coming up and highly rated on Top Prospects and I didn't think I would need another infielder. I know now that I really didn't understand OOTP (baseball in general) drafting at the time.

My 1st instinct is that mine somehow involves either Yan Van Adel or the infamous "$30 million dollar At-Bat". Have to dig deeper though.

Not so much the Carbajal signing in a vacuum, but hindsight being what it is his numbers at that price I would take back.

My history is short so this is easy. Trading for Joe Aurillo with Pawtucket. When I traded for him my scout said he was a #2 or 3 pitcher. I can't even type what he has to say now for fear of being banned from the forums! He's gone from a 5-7-5 to a 3-6-3 in just 2 seasons! As if the free-fall wasn't enough he thinks he can still pitch, refusing to be sent down to the minors!

You've heard it before huh? New guy makes a deal for an older pitcher and gets burned. Not so fast. Pawtucket then used his new financial freedom to sign Harry Keppel from my organization, thereby helping to rip the foundation away from a team whose entire offense was based on two power hitters. To say that I would take pleasure playing spoiler is an understatement.

I've had some good deals, but if you stay active long enough a few of these are bound to happen:

Free agent NON SIGN: I'm going to say not resigning P Alonzo Gugierrez after the 92 season when all he asked for was think 7.5 for 3 years!!! Thought wheels were ready to come off, but obviously missed on that.

Draft pick is (well in hindsight): Lim instead of Sau. I was looking to add pitching to at the time was very poor pitching at Pawtucket. Still, just imagining Sau & Samuel in the outfield together right now.

Trade: Recent and very easy. Goodwin for Guzman. Scout liked him, OSA liked him, but didnt pan out. Goodwin will do well in the IL, but really missing Guzmans inning eating abilty right now. Easily the worst move I've done. Weakened Pawtucket, strengthened Hartford a double hit. (He pitches every other year so next year wont be so bad)

I do remember trying to talk you out of this deal. I had no issue dumping this kid since my team makes money hand over fist. But NO, you wanted him.

A main chapter in Carlos' book: The Worst Trade In BLB History. Although after that trade, I did have 5 winning seasons, two Porter titles, and a 93 win season where I didn't make the playoffs because of how terrible the Bock was.

Sure I wanted him, to be a #2 or #3 pitcher. But don't deny you pushed him and the deal. Otherwise how does Pat Powell fit into this? Another one of your throw in suggestions, which lends credence to my previous statement. There is SIGNIFICANT amounts of data in regards to your trading habits. I'm pretty sure we all knew who the aggressor was on this one. Or would you care to take a poll on it and wager?

The Anibal Alsina extension. I had no way of knowing at the time that he'd suffer a wrist injury that would turn him from an All-Star outfielder to a AAA player, but I'd take that one back if I could.
