  • BLB "What If..." #6

Pick 8 position players (no DH), a LHP, RHP and reliever from the entire BLB Universe to build a dream team.

Who are the players? (Player must be recognized as having played the position throughout most of his career*)
    What is your lineup?
Which of the two pitchers gets the ball in Game One?

*Does not necessarily mean it is where they played the most. (ie: Carlton could be rightfully argued that he was both a starter and reliever. You can choose which spot he takes).

**Outfielders can be listed as OF rather than either of the three positions.

I'll just make this easy and choose either the 1991 or 1992 Colonials.

My uneducated, quick thoughts of an All-Time Team:

C - Malachi Stiver (his Stout Slugger puts him over Lumar for me).
1B - Harry Keppel (though I did consider Gremades).
2B - Geoff Scott (not who he used to be, but nobody compares to what he was).
3B - Pedro Zamarida (nod over Buzzell because of defense)
SS - Johnny Sanchez (nod over O'Hegarty because of DWI Awards)
        OF - Mel Woodbury (duh)
OF - Nick Latham (defense, Hall of Famer, longevity)
OF - Jose Guzman (11-time All-Star. Consistently good)

LHP - Gil O'Moore (More Pale Ales if Teagan isn't born)
RHP - Teagan Corrigan (The Pale Ale)
        RP - Vernon Simmonds (because)

        The Lineup
        Nick Latham
        Geoff Scott
        Harry Keppel
        Mel Woodbury
        Pedro Zamarida
        Jose Guzman
        Johnny Sanchez
        Malachi Stiver
        Teagan Corrigan (on the mound)

A Team of Today's Future Stars (Gonna make it "30 or under" for fun)

C - Rod Phillips (still 30, already a 3-time All-Star and DWI winner. And Champion)
1B - Joe Rojas (New Brew, 3-time All Star)
        2B - Chuck Durham (3-time All Star)
3B - Yoritoki Maeda (over Victor Gonzalez because of defense)
SS - Hector Chavez (no question. 2-time Stout Slugger)
OF - Jerry Daly (obviously The Logo would be here without the Under 30 Rule I set for myself)
OF - Pancho Perez (Knight misses the cut by next SIM)
OF -Doug Bryant (feeling like the future isn't too bright in the OF...)

LHP - Hector Castre (deserving, though you wish there were more dominant lefties)
RHP - Pancho Herrera (if not already, on his way to being the best of all-time)
RP - J.J. Black (Bayer is too old...)

        The Lineup
        Jerry Daly
        Yoritoka Maeda
        Joe Rojas
        Hector Chavez
        Rod Phillips
        Pancho Perez
        Chuck Durham
        Doug Bryant
        Pancho Herrera (gets the ball)

        May the drama begin.

5 years ago, Wilkerson would have been on the top of the list of elite pitchers.

Is that list of Under 30 players based on what they've done in their career, or who you'd want to have on your team right now?

There's probably a more deserving under-30 OF but I wanted this to be a real quick, no thinking deal (kind of like how professional writers approach these lists).

Also expect that these kinds of lists will make up a good portion of the book. Whenever it is I finish it or even get better than just started.

So I like these What If scenarios because I will secretly be using them to judge thoughts against my own.

I wanted guys that have a history rather than be rookies or two years into a fantastic career.

You can do it however you want.

I like it. Can't argue those. Well, I'm not so sure about George over the guys I picked as 1a and 1b, but if anything George is my #2/3.

Probably a bit of bias, but I think George is another one of those guys who was very good for a very long time. Not really great, but I'd take him on my team in his prime and even a few years later than that.
