  • Midseason Report: Talk about Your Team!

Stole this from a former OSFL life that I had.

    Baltimore Bullldogs
37-45 14 GB, 4th in Porter and 7 GB in WC

-We are on pace to have the absolute worse pitching performance in franchise history. Our silver linings have to be that the IL is pretty terrible right now so we are only 7 games out of grabbing a WC birth, albeit that is unlikely.

    1995 First Half Highlights:

-Despite the cries about his defense at third base, Kyoden Kubota has been playing like a man possessed since late May. He's moved up to #3 on the Top Hitters List and an outside candidate for IL Slugger. Unfortunately, the old and new juiced up versions of Woodbury in Virginia will likely deny him that honor. Either way, Kubota has been awesome FA pickup for us over the last couple of years, especially since he has pretty much unseated Wallace as the face of the Baltimore franchise.

-Brad Cherry has been a pleasant surprise for us. I only expected him to be a backup OF but he has played his way into the everyday lineup. Hitting over .320 for the year, he has been a very reliable hitter at the plate. He's a testament of the success that you can have if you just leave the Pawtucket organization.

-Don Castor strained his hamstring last week, so the All-Star break couldn't have come at a better time. Despite leading the league in HR and RBI, Castor isn't really having a good year, missing the All-Star game for the first time since his rookie year. He'll also miss the Virginia series that opens the 2nd half of the season. This is fine since we pretty much have no chance whether he is in the lineup or not.

-Our pitching is horrendous. I cringe every time I watch a game waiting for the opposition to open a can of whoop-ass at any given time. The 2nd half of the season isn't expected to be any different since I really haven't changed much.

    2nd Half Outlook:

-Another silver lining is that our bats have awoken a bit. We hit just 10 HR in April and 18 in May, but exploded for 33 in June and 16 through just 8 games in July. I expected our pitching to bad, but I wasn't prepared for the early power outage displayed by the squad. If guys start swinging like they are capable of doing, we may have an outside chance at a playoff spot.

-A couple of years ago, Dani Salcido was struggling as as starter. We put him at closer and he was nothing short of lights out, helping to get us to the playoffs. With Don McKay struggling this year, Salcido is once again being moved to closer for the 2nd half of the season. He will be a guy to keep an eye on as I believe this will do wonders for his confidence and performance in the 2nd half of the season.

-Another guy to watch will be Sze Zhu. I know that he was too green to be in the BLB and could've used another year in the minors. But after watching a lot of the games this year, I really think he has a chance to put it all together in the 2nd half of the season. He doesn't strike out a lot, has the 2nd best eye (walks) on the team behind Kubota, and lately has been hitting much better than earlier in the season. His average is not great but I've watched him play and I think he has the potential to replace a guy like Ivan Garcia at the plate.

Let me be completely honest, I don't expect to make the playoffs. We will, however, try to make the best of the 2nd half of the season and build for a true, playoff caliber team next year.

            Batavia Muckdogs

            51-31 (.622) - 1st Place in the Porter

Well I guess we can say we have exceeded our wildest expectations. To be in first place in the Porter by 9 games with the All-Star game fast approaching has created a lot of excitement around New York. First year manager Don Clark has this team playing well and we're hoping he can continue to motivate this team the second half of the year.

            Pitching

            - The bullpen continues to dominate as their 2.91 ERA is 1st in the IL. Tad Crossman is back from injury after only playing 11 games in '94 and so far has been brilliant. His 0.95 ERA and 1.08 WHIP have been all we can ask for in the setup role. Throw in Basil Petrohilos (2.36 ERA) and Ken Bayer (1.89 ERA, 28 saves) and you have a pretty good 1-2-3.

            - After starting slowly SP Hector Castre is 5-1 over his last 8 games and is now 8-4 with a 2.97 ERA. The other ace is Raul Gonzalez who's 7-4 record and 3.72 ERA will more than likely improve in the second half. Offseason FA acquisition Tommy Lang has been respectable and waiver wire pickup Robby Johnston has been a nice 6th pitcher who's giving the rest of the staff an extra day break.

            Hitting

            - The bats have been alive in Batavia this year. Currently the Muckdogs lead the IL with a .276 average and 776 hits.

            - The Brazilian dream team of 2B Helespontico Jarava and LF Hector Coronel continue to pound pitchers. Jarava leads the BLB with a .355 average and Coronel has won rookie of the month 3 times and was selected to the All-Star game. Neither of them are power hitters but they get on base at over a .400 clip and have driven in 43 and 44 runs respectively.

            - 1B Shawn Ray spent almost all last year in AAA but improved over the off-season and got the starting nod opening day. He has exploded with a .330/.399/.474 stat line and was selected to his 1st All-Star appearance.

            Second Half Outlook

Can the Muckdogs keep on chugging? That seems to be the question asked around the country. No one believed they would be neck and neck with Virginia for the leagues best record but here they sit. Many predicted Philly would win the division and the Freedom look like they are turning things around. Will Batavia be able to hold them off down the stretch...only time will tell!

Pittsburg Miller: 50-32 1st in the Ale and DL overall

We find ourselves in first again at the break (although thats only five games out of the cellar). We got to this point very differently in '95. Pitching has been our staple this year with 3 pitchers in the Top 20. Although hitting has not been far behind even after losing future Hall of Famers Geoff Scott and Jose Guzman.

              First Half Highlights:

              FA Singings
              - Ron O'Fallon: .286/.412/.516 .928 OPS, 16 HR's, 55 BB's, 22.4 VORP

              - Jared Austin: .287/.366/.463 .829 OPS, All-star starter, Only 18 K's in 272 AB's

              - Marlon DeClare: .317 AVG, .405 OBP Has been hurt the last 5 weeks and our defense has really suffered. Thats why we got him, for the D and his speed so the hitting has been gravy.

              - Authur Pereira: Only 22.2 IP so he has not had a huge effect but has been solid with a 2.38 ERA.

              Hitters
              - Christian Negron (FA from last year) continues to ouplay his ratings and even my expectations. He is hitting .278 with 12 HR's in 61 games. In 115 less AB's this year he has 4 more RBI than all of last year and is on pace for 112 on the season.

              - Everardo "Shitty" Gremades has put up his usual consistant numbers. 16 HR's with 56 RBI's, 65 Runs and almost 70 walks. Oh yea and a .964 OPS.

              Pitchers
              - Carrillo has done very well this year. I have tried to play him mostly on the road with his poor movement and so far it has paid off as he will be the All-star starter this year. 2.43 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP and leads the DL in IP, VORP, and WHIP. He is second in K's, K/BB and BB/9IP.

              - Nate Taylor's first two months were pretty darn good and I thought maybe he had finally got comfortable. He was 8-1 with 64 K's and a 3.32 ERA. Then he signed a contract extension and had 4 terrible starts to get himself to the all-star break at 9-2 with 4.62 ERA and 85 K's

              - Pete Fitzgerald has had the tough task of pitching mostly at home because of Carrillo needing to pitch on the road. He has done well with what we have asked posting a 3.53 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP with 88 K's.

              - Ollie Kane finds himself hopping on and off the Top 20 list this year has he continues to flourish since moving from the closer role at the begining of last year. Kane is 6th in ERA (3.22), 8th in VORP (24.4), 5th in H/9IP, and 6th in WHIP (1.12).

              - Adrian Diaz continues to put up numbers like usual. His second appearence this season he gave up 4 runs in 0.2 IP. He then proceeded to go 19 appearences and 21.2 IP without giving up an ER. He has a 2.11 ERA, a 0.86 WHIP and 17 SV's with 40 K's in 38.1 IP.

              Second Half Outlook:

We look to battle for the division crown or the WC down to the last week of the season. Hoping we dont fall apart mid-august again. We look forward to getting Marlon DeClare and Pancho Martinez back to our OF which was thin before they both were hurt. Negron, Gremades and O'Fallon really cant wait so they don't get stuck out the corner OF positions anymore. We also cant wait to get our young stud BP arm Travis Oelshlager back, who has been out three months with a strained hamstring. All in all I like where we are at but I also realize that one bad sim might have us looking up at the rest of the division.

Come on... you guys know I don't like to talk about my team...

                ....

                ...

                ..

                .

                .

Honestly... this is an interesting team for me. I think it may be the best OFFENSIVE team I've ever had. It's ridiculously good... in fact....

I know Kubota is having a great season... but if I was casting a Stout Slugger ballot right now... I'd have to be seriously convinced not to have 3 Colonials as 1-2-3 on my ballot.

#1 - Hector Chavez -- Quietly having a season that may dwarf his previous two Stout Slugger seasons.

#2 - Jerry Daly - This is where you'll all call me STUPID... CRAZY... HOMER... look at the numbers. Yes, his .924 OPS doesn't shout SS... but what he's doing on the bases is amazing. He's on pace to hit 25 and close to 100.... score over 150 R... and he hasn't made an error in the largest OF in the BLB in YEARS... not games.... YEARS. Remember when this dude was on the block this off-season and everyone low balled me?

                #3 - Father Time - Yep.

So yes.... I love my offense. They take some games off... but they're studs.

As far as pitching.... Can't hate my starters. Can't stand my bullpen. The loan bright spot (for me) is really that I was able to find a spot for "The Skull" and he's been decent.

                What's to come????

I think the Stout is all but a done deal. No disrespect to the gang... but I think they're playing for 2nd. Just being honest.

As far as Playoffs.... say what you will about the ALE.... but the DL doesn't scare me at all. I think VIR and BAT are the two best teams in the league right now... I think DAV is right there in the next tier.... and I honestly think that a good deadline for PHI could put them back in the conversation because that team can PITCH!
