  • SHAVERMETRICS - Draft Edition - 1995

Going to try something a little new with SHAVERMETRICS. Like a few other loaners, I've kept my spread sheets over the years of how I ranked players. During each draft, I keep track of not only where they're taken, but where they debut on the BA TOP PROSPECTS LIST. It's no secret that the TOP PLAYERS and TOP PROSPECTS LIST is something that I value.

So... what we're going to debut this year is SHAVERMETRICS predictions of if and where each 1st Round pick will debut on the BA TOP PROSPECTS list based on my opinions of their value, how the list is comprised, and the current stock of players on the list. I've kind of done it hit and miss the last two years, but never actually put it on paper (screen).

I'm going to do them in the first post here... and I'll bump it as I add more.... just do a few at a time.

    Feel free to discuss....

    SHAVERMETRICS - Draft Edition - 1995

1.1 - Hartford Whalers - Pat Bryant (SP) - I expect Bryant to debut as the highest player to come out of the 1995 Draft. He's got just about everything you could want in a pitching prospect, though his CURRENT ratings are a little low for a 21 year old. BA PREDICTION: Top 3 - Highest Rated Pitcher (95)

1.2 - Virginia Colonials - T.J. Knudson (CF) - 5-tool potential and an impressive resume in the Feeder system. Two 20+ game hittings streaks this season. He's years away, but only 18. BA PREDICTION: Top 8-10 - Highest Rated Hitter (95) - Eventually will be #1

1.3 - Wilmington Wildcats - Justin Linseman (CF) - Our first INTERNATIONAL player taken, Lineseman is a lanky OF with decent speed. Seems to be a boom or bust type by the rumblings of some BLB organizations. BA PREDICTION: Top 50

1.4 - Hyundai Dinos - Tom Swanson (CF)
    - "Grinder" rounds out three straight OF prospects in the draft and could be considered T.J. Knudson 1.1. The two are very similar with Swanson just a step slower and a little more of a free swinger. We still see his debut very high. BA PREDICTION: Top 8-15 - 2nd Highest Rated Batter in 95

1.5 - California Kodiaks - Ron Pillsbury (3B) - Pillsbury was the best available player in a VERY thin class of Infielders this season. Even Catchers and 1B were suspiciously absent. Pillsbury was solid, but completely unspectacular in College at Rice. If he develops, he'll contend for a batting title, unfortunately, I'm not sure the scouts see it. He'll be a great defender on the hot-corner and should get a solid look in California. BA PREDICTION: Borderline Top 100 - If he makes the list, it will be in the 90-100 range.

1.6 - Syracuse Slammers - Travis Skinner (SP) - Sub 2.00 and Sub 0.85 WHIP for his career at Oregon State. Looks like a great prospect. Dominates with amazing control and big K numbers at the NCAA level. BA PREDICTION: Top 30

    ...more to come...

Interesting. I like Knudson. I'm not sure he's #1 ever, but I like him. At the moment, I think there's a few hitters on the list he'll struggle to get past.

Bryant will be the highest rated in this class.

I only think TJK gets to #1 eventually because I think he debuts TOP 10 at 18. I think he'll just move up through other guys dropping off when they hit the BLB. Saw a similar climb with Colon from my team.

He kind of reminds me of Jerry Brown (in terms or ranking), who I picked a couple seasons ago. Brown debuted top 5 I think. He struggles in A ball, drops down the list then he jumps back up when it re-ranks every season.

Brown will still be fine, in case anyone's wondering. Happy to have him.

Was gonna see if you wanted to hold up the draft some more and trade him.

I'd like to see the rest of this list, Sir Clay.

After some thought, I realize saying Knudson won't get to #1 and then comparing him to Brown isn't the best thing I've done, seeing how Fury made it to #1 a couple of times.

Just remember you don't have to offer him a contract for like 7-9 years.
