      Here comes 'The Crow!'

Mal Brady was the 12th overall pick of the 1993 BLB Draft out of USC. In his sophomore season as a Trojan he hit 27 homeruns in 36 games. It's rare to see such power in any player, almost unheard of in Washington since MAP.

Struggled in '93... Again guys, we need a Rookie League...then had a .943 OPS, prompting a Double-A callup where he hit .269 in 69 games. In '95 he hit .315, got promoted to Triple-A, where he has now hit 15 homers with a .919 OPS.

He is poor defensively... But I'm going to try and hide him at LF/1B. I also don't think he is close to being fully developed but my offense could use a spark.

We've got a few guys making their BLB Debut over the next few days... but the one guy I'm most excited to see is....

        Gene Legere (SP)

#59 currently on the BA Top Prospects list (#36 was the highest level he reached), Legere won two NCAA Championships at USC compiling a 26-8 record at that level. Drafted 1.6 in the 1992 draft, Gene is in the plans to be part of the regular 6-man rotation in Virginia next season. He fits that "Colonial-style" with his high K, low BB and strong GB%. He'll get two starts in his first week of actions - each against Stout rivals in Morgantown and home for Wilmington.

          1b Wessin Ramirez

September callup: Acquired in the Gil O'Moore trade with Denver, Ramirez has the potential to grow into a fairly significant power bat for us according to our scouts. He'll probably never hit for too high of an average (hoping for a .235-.260 type range). He currently sits at #49 on the prospect list, but he's already 24 so this offseason is probably a make or break talent adjustment period for him. I'm certain our ballpark will crush any hope he ever had of being a decent BLB level hitter.

I like this kid. Not a lot of power bats that hit switch. I think if he develops he's on the high side of that .260 estimate. He's a better version of the guy I have playing 1B.

.235 was factoring in the pressure of playing in our ballpark and the constant threat of being traded away because ownership gets bored.

I was already factoring in his trade to Virginia.

Wes can be a power threat, but I'm not sure he is ever a really good contact hitter.

He predictably struggled in his first BLB action, but he did notch his 1st BLB HR in a 6-4 win over BAT on 09/07. So, he's got that going for him . . . .which is nice.

I think that's good. We know these kids tend to struggle out the gates and Wes still has a little growing to do. At least he showed he can definitely muscle one out (No Pat, not like that).

Two no-decisions in his first two starts.... but we're all in all happy with how he looks. I think he's going to lock in a TOP 6 spot in our rotation next season.

                        #25 BA Prospect
                        LF - Doug Gill

Gill came over in the deal that sent Rod Phillips to Carolina and was always a guy that Virginia was watching in the minors. He's having a very nice AAA season (June BOM & ASG Selection) though his ratings aren't as good as his stats.

Gill will take some swings as the starting LF pushing Colon back to his natural 2B - where he'll platoon with Anibal Roman.

                        Game on.
Big bright spot so far. Wish the kid would take a pitch every once in awhile.... but 7 HRs, 30 RBI and really solid play in LF in his 1st 36 games have cemented Gill's spot on the playoff roster and LF job for '96.

Legere just needs to have his control match his potential.

I think everything else will fall into place once that happens. Good pitcher.

                            SP Ukessun Kayra
                            3.3 1991

Welcome to the Big Show. DelPrez has been trying to get me to throw him in every single deal we talk about, so he'll be happy to see he's getting his chance. One of my first ever picks, I've managed to keep the Ugandan lefty out of a ton of deals the last 4 years.

He finally gets his chance to see if I was right. With an above average splitter and cutter and limited stamina, Kayra has projected everywhere from #3 starter to above average MR the last few seasons.

In his first start, he pitched 5 scoreless innings with 4 hits, 4 Ks and 3 walks to post his first career win. We're counting on Kayra to grow into a solid #3-#4 type starter the next few seasons. He should be on the BLB roster to stay.

                              CF Ivan Cervantes

Cervantes was called up to Carolina this past week after winning the AAA championship with Winston-Salem. In his first at-bat in the BLB, he hit a walk-off HR to beat Los Alamos in the bottom of the 10th inning. Cervantes followed that up two nights later with a 2-run game-tying single, again as a pinch-hitter. Going forward, Cervantes will most likely find time in a platoon with regular CF Pat Faulkner.

                              He's currently #89 on the Top 100.
