Virginia Re-Signs Chavez to Extension
Monday, February 20th, 1995: Happy times in Virginia as the Colonials and star shortstop Hctor Chvez put the finishing touches on a $80,750,000 contract extension that will keep the 27-year-old in town 6 years longer.
The signing is great news for Virginia because players of this caliber are hard to come by.
In his 713-game career Chvez is hitting .342 with 986 hits, 124 home runs, 621 runs scored and 521 RBIs.
After almost an entire (in-game) year of negotiations, the Colonials are happy to lock up Hector Chavez for the next 6 seasons. We tried to go for a 10 year in the beginning to lock him down through his prime, but we finally worked down to buying out his last year of Arbitration, the rest of his 20's and a few extra. Chavez is the cornerstone of this team now and getting him down at this price will help us big picture. However, I have no doubts the 33 year old version of Chavez may break the bank when he hits FA after the 2001 season.
