The "Iron Horse" is down again. Adam Nickell is going to miss 3 months with a torn ligament in his thumb. That guy was really something for a few seasons.

3-3 at the BLB level, so I'm happy with that. Could have done without the injuries in the minors though.

Baltimore Bulldogs (56-51, 1GB in Porter, 2 GB in WC)

                2-1 @ CAR
                1-2 v WIL

-I'm never surprised when we lose a series to Wilmington. No matter how bad they are "supposed" to be, they always find a way to take a dump in Phillips Field. I guess the silver lining is that Batavia didn't have a good week and we gained two games on them, to put us only one game behind.

                The Good

-The Spoils Go To The Victor: This past week, Victor Escamilla showed that he really wants to win. He is often called selfish by his coaches, but that selfishness was turned into production this week. Escamilla led the team in batting average at .385 and added 4 doubles for the week. We'll need a lot more weeks like this from the San Diego native.

Not Quite Ready: A couple of weeks back, I mentioned the fact that Franklin Martinez, a young, up-and-coming reliever for the Bulldogs, wasn't ready for a high pressure closer or set up role. Moving Martinez back to a middle reliever role paid dividends this week, as Martinez led all Baltimore pitchers in strikeouts for the week with 7. Martinez did this in just under five innings of work and posted a 1.93 ERA. He's only 21 and I can't wait for him to get a bit more experience under his belt. He's going to be very good.

The Man With Two First Names: Former Sin City (the team that relocated to New Orleans) pitcher, Dewitt Michael pitched a gem against Carolina last week. In 7 innings, Michael only gave up 3 hits with no earned runs, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Easily his best outing of the season, I have no doubt that demoting Michael to AAA this season made him realize that pitching in the BLB is an earned privilege, not a right.

                The Bad

Sometimes It Just Happens, Coach: In Baltimore, we have been known to maintain a bullpen full of big arms like Deron Vaughn. Vaughn had played particularly well in a setup role in Baltimore until the past game against Wilmington. With the team already down 6-4 going into the 7th, Vaughn came in and had a complete breakdown in his control. Deron gave up 5 earned runs with 2 hits and 4 BB's. We ended up losing the game 11-10.

                The Ugly

-Never Listen To A Cocky or Cockney Carlos: I had already made the decision to promote young phenom, Derek Vleugel to AA ball, but I figured with Carlos co-signing the move, it had to be a good move right? Vleugel got shelled in his first outing in AA, 4.1 IP, 11 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K's. Welcome to the pros, son.

                The Week Ahead

-Playing Virginia at home and Chicago away? This could get ugly. The only silver lining I see is Batavia has to face to top teams as well, Washington and the defending champion Bandits. I love this time of year.

                Who Cares?-Trivia

This past week, Loren Wallace became the fifth player in BLB history to hit for the cycle twice in his career.

                Name the first four.

                    Correct.

                    I should have known another 1 but I didn't.

So what you're saying is Baltimore is the only team to have two players complete the cycle twice in their careers?

Edit: Also, why is Zamarida wearing #7 for Philly? I can tell you right now, Brad, unless he gets his #5 back, he's not gonna hit. He draws his power from the Montecristo No. 5 cuban cigar.

                        1-5

We have 5 pitchers "on fire", then proceed to hit .213 and lose three 1-run games and one in extra innings. A chance to get a little space in the Porter and we Muckdog it up.

First ballot Hall of Famer. Unlike a lot of the greats (Corrigan, Chavs) this guy was an elite pitcher from Day 1 to the end of his career. It's a privilege to have had him on this team. That being said, I hope this season does not end anytime soon.

Be interesting to see if Theodore hangs them up this off-season too.

I'd wager he will. It's too bad the way his career petered out at the end, but that's what old pitchers do.
