  • 1994 BLB Debut Thread

    It's time.

    Ki-hyeon Lim
    Pick 1.2 - 1990
    Starting Pitcher (R)

Well, he's finally here. Last year he suffered a shoulder injury that knocked some brightness from his star, but he's come back mostly healthy this year in AAA, and with another last place finish in head of us, it's time to see what Mr. Lim, the former #1 prospect in the BLB, brings to the table.

Will he be a top flight starter that he seemed to be before the injury? I doubt it... could he contribute to the rotation? Hopefully. If not, I'm sure he'll fit right in, with the other flame throwers in my bullpen.

Either way, we're all about to witness the beginning of the Lim Dynasty.

    Enjoy the ride.

It's not a true BLB debut, per say... but...

      Fakhretdin Tetradze (RF) - Pick 7.7 - 1987

Disclaimer: Tetradze appeared in 18 games last year.

We thought the 25 year old Tetradze would be in the BLB a few years ago, but we're hoping it was worth the wait after his 1994 AAA campaign. For the year, Tetradze has a .995 OPS and is getting on base at a .493 clip. Tetradze, who does have injury issues, missed 6 weeks this year due to a strained oblique, but hasn't missed a beat since he's returned, with a .500 OBP in July.

We're hoping Tetradze can be a long term leadoff hitter for us as part of our youth movement in the OF with the likes of living legend to be rub Martinez. Here's to hoping.

What a rare combination. Speedy, but lazy Soviet.

          Franklin Martinez (MR)

-Martinez is a 21 year old flame thrower out of Guatemala. Drafted at 18 years old as the Bulldogs' 2nd round pick in the 1991 draft, Martinez was always vocal with us that he felt he deserved to play in the BLB from the day he stepped off the plane in Orlando (A). He backed up the talk with stellar play in Orlando in 1991.

Martinez worked his way up the ranks quickly. Coupling his desire to play in the majors with the losses of veteran pitchers like Kraft and DeLacy, Martinez found himself in the Baltimore bullpen this year.

Again, Martinez didn't disappoint. With a fastball clocked at 100 mph and just enough of a change-up to keep batters honest, Martinez has been a stabilizing force for our bullpen. Martinez has a great ability to come in and play well, especially after our starters have struggled.

          Marv Barnes (RF)

(Marv also needs a slight disclaimer-27 AB last year with Morgantown)

-Barnes came to Baltimore during the last off-season in a player for player trade from Morgantown. Before becoming the 1st pick of the 2nd round in the 1990 amateur draft, Barnes put up consistent numbers in the Cap Cod league including two years with OPS over 1.000.

After joining the Morgantown organization, Marv continued to play well but was often overshadowed by many of the up and coming stars that also played within the Morgantown system. With young names like Adili, Howell, and Amilakhori, there just didn't seem to be enough room for Barnes and he was shipped off to Baltimore in exchange for Pete Miles (C).

This year in Baltimore, Barnes has had a spectacular start to his rookie campaign. He leads all rookies in the BLB in nearly every statistical category and if he can keep it up, he should be a top competitor for the IL New Brew Award.

          Jerry Evans (MR)

(Jerry also needs a disclaimer as he pitched 6 innings last year)

-Another 2nd round pick for us back in 1990, Jerry Evans was part of one of the better drafts of 1990 (6 current BLB players). Along with Travis Oelschlager, who is now performing well in Maine, Evans was selected with the idea that he would become a huge part of a dominant bullpen for the Bulldogs.

Evans has played well in his rookie year, including June where he boasted a 1.88 ERA giving up just 3 ER in 14.1 innings and striking out 17.

            Sze Zhu (3B)

-Sze Zhu is probably a guy who will end up in the the One Man's Trash Thread. Chosen in the 10th round by the Freedom in 1989 at just 17 years old, Zhu was terrible and obviously not ready to play as a professional player. Subsequently, he was cut the following year by the Freedom but, was quickly signed by the Washington organization. This signing was short lived, as Zhu was cut again the following month.

Without a job in pro baseball for almost a year, Zhu was signed again but this time with the Batavia organization in 1991. This period was again short lived, as he was cut for a 3rd time, just two months later. Zhu was again out of baseball, but in 1992, he got a call from us. Zhu did not disappoint as he put up great numbers in both 1992 and 1993 with the Orlando Blackbirds and after just one half-year of play in Camden, Zhu was fast tracked to Baltimore, where we expect him to continue his growth into a decent player at the BLB level.

In what is, at the least, my most anticipated BLB debut in a long, long time, my man

              OF rub Martinez - 1992 1.23

will be making his BLB debut tonight. rub has shot up the top prospects chart this year, peaking at 17 after spending most of his minor league career in the bottom half of the top 100.

In 1994, rub has crushed AAA pitching, although a miserable July has dropped his OPS nearly 200 points to .960, and I'm hoping he's just getting bored in AAA. He is pissed about it.

There's a lot of reasons I'm excited about rub, one of which being that he's only my second 1st rounder to make the bigs with the Slammers since I took over, and the other was shitty old Cristobal Sandoval. My history:

1985 1.7 - SP Raul Perez (my scout had this guy rated at the same level as Pancho that year. Career 8.31 ERA in 8.2 BLB innings)
1985 1.20 - 2B Cristobal Sandoval (did debut with us in 1991; in two seasons, had a .563 OPS with us)
1987 1.11 - SP Jerry Wilson (debuted in 1994 with Wilmington; career 5.36 ERA in 18 starts)
1988 1.8 - Tamasaburo Okamoto (debuted in 1993 with Indy; career 11.05 BLB ERA)
1988 1.20 - 1B Willie Marshall (never made the show; career .229 hitter between the Cape and Minors)
1989 1.12 - OF Glen Conley (yet to make the show; currently hitting .226 in AAA)
1990 1.23 - SP Alex Torres (debuted in 1994 with California; tearing it up and ripping my heart out after being traded for Conan Wilkerson who now sports a 5.16 ERA)
1991 1.20 Tadasuke Uchiyama (debuted in 1993 with Philly; playing decent)

              1992 1.23 rub Martinez.

I love his name. I love his (lack of) speed. I love his work ethic. Here's to hoping.

Welcome to my previous world. My old scout was garbage...the new guy is a little better. The way this game scouts and gives huge advantages to certain teams is ridiculous.

Funny thing is... my scout when I took over was 8-8-7-8. Then my next scout was kind of a bum, but I only had him for two years (?). My new scout is Legendary across the board, but I still have zero confidence in him. But, since 90, my draft picks have all been developing nicely, except for Willie Castro who had a (edited) CEI.

We are getting killed by injuries this year. Seven BLBers on the mend and my top two pitching prospects get injured for over a year.
