  • The One Man's Trash Thread

I'm pretty bored tonight, so I started looking through old drafts and found out that I've had some pretty good draftees............

that I cut and some other asshole is trying to reap the benefits. In the spirit of the draft, I thought it may be a nice thread to watch over the years.

    Case #1:

John Dunbar (P), Evanston Hit Kings (A)

As the 208th pick of the 1991 draft, Dunbar should have been on the radar, especially since he pitched a no-hitter in high school. He put up respectable numbers but struggled in our system. Fast forward to 1994 and OSA believes John is 6-5-5 with an 8-Fastball and 7-Curveball. I'm going to be livid if he becomes a starter in Indy.

Ivan Hernandez (P), Lawrence Patriots (AA)

-Ivan was also a 9th round pick for us, this time in 1990. The kid was terrible in Orlando (A) for us. He gets cut, moves into the Pawtucket system, and "prest-o, change-o" this fool is a bona fide relief prospect.

The only good thing about this story is, that it goes both ways. I've picked up a few stragglers as well.

Pirro Hildalgo (C), Tucson Bulls (AAA)

The Arizona State player was selected in the 10th round of the 1991 draft. He was cut the very next day by the Carolina organization. Pirro hung around as a free agent until the end of the 1991 season and was scooped up by Baltimore 10/1/1991. He started his professional career in our AA organization and was a key trade piece in the move to bring Greene from Denver.

As I come across more late draftees that were cut by one system, but groomed by another I'll post them here. Feel free to add if you have anyone.

Awesome. Another opportunity to point out that I also cut Derrek Tucker.

      Doug Bryant

Doug was drafted in the 9th round of the 1987 draft by Batavia.....and cut the next day. He was a man without a team for a full year until Pitt picked him up in 1988 and fast tracked him to the big leagues where he showed some promise but was traded to Windy City in 1990.

He has since made the all star game and is batting .378 right now as an every day starter for Windy City.

Currently in my organization, I have:

        MR Turi Soto

Soto went undrafted in 1985 and spent almost 2 years looking for a job before getting picked up by the Bats on 4/28/1987. He was then released in July of that year and it took until April of 1988 before he was signed by Carolina. He made his debut in 1991, then tore his labrum 2 months later. Somehow, he's turned himself into a dependable reliever for my team.

        RF Seung-kab Hyon

Denver selected Hyon with the 20th pick of round 8 in 1990. After struggling at A Little Rock he was released a year later. I signed him in April of 1992 and he's hit well ever since. My scout seems to like him a little more each time he updates and now he sits at #13 in my organization's Top Prospect list. I'm hopeful that Hyon has a BLB future.

          C Pete Miller

Pete was a 9th round pick, 168th overall by Hartford back in 1980. 10 months later, he was released, only to sit in Free Agency for eight months before we snatched him up to fill our system after becoming a BLB franchise.

I remember seeing him as an average at best hitter with solid defense behind the plate. But mostly we needed another catcher. Then came two straight years of potential increases, the second being quite substantial. Pete went from nobody to the #22 prospect in the BLB. Six months later, he was the 5th best prospect in the BLB and on the verge of becoming the face of our organization for the next 10 years.

Since joining the Clowns, Pete has racked up a Stout Slugger in 1987, a DWI in 1991, and two All-Star appearances in a catcher heavy league. Despite some struggles the past couple years, Pete remains one of the most popular players under the Big Top.

I tried to sign Pete Miller and he chose your team instead. Always upsets me.

The only guy I can think of, though, it's much too early is 2B Victor Garcia.

Drafted in the 9th round by Windy City in 1989. He spent a year in Janesville, struggled and was released.

I originally signed him as an infielder that could play multiple positions and spell relief for my minor leaguers. I even fast tracked him to AAA because I needed him to play backup. Decided to hold onto him and demote him to AA where he started to show some signs.

We'll see where he goes from there now that he's the everyday 2B in Denver.

(Copied from the BLB debut thread)

                Sze Zhu (3B)

                - Chosen in the 10th round by the Freedom in 1989 at just 17 years old, Zhu was terrible and obviously not ready to play as a professional player. Subsequently, he was cut the following year by the Freedom but, was quickly signed by the Washington organization. This signing was short lived, as Zhu was cut again the following month.

Without a job in pro baseball for almost a year, Zhu was signed again but this time with the Batavia organization in 1991. This period was again short lived, as he was cut for a 3rd time, just two months later. Zhu was again out of baseball, but in 1992, he got a call from us. Zhu did not disappoint as he put up great numbers in both 1992 and 1993 with the Orlando Blackbirds and after just one half-year of play in Camden, Zhu was fast tracked to Baltimore, where we expect him to continue his growth into a decent player at the BLB level.

                    It is stupid!

By the way, Jistic. Victor Garcia, rookie season. So far 9 HR 47 RBI and .280/.330/.429/.759

Not too bad for a guy that was released in A ball.

That was on purpose. I thought Jistic might gloss over it, so I wanted that second post to be right there waiting.

Doug Bryant's in the All Star game, that helps.

                              Brad Cherry (OF)

-Cherry was a 4th round draft pick by the Pawtucket Patriots back in 1989. Cherry was given the greatest New Year's present ever by his employer in 1990, a pink slip. Baltimore's scouting staff saw a bit of promise in the kid and he was picked up before the end of January by the Bulldogs' organization. He hit just a shade over .290 in his first full year of pro baseball. He spent the next 3 years in AA ball and in 1993 was promoted to AAA Annapolis.

It was in AAA ball where Cherry blossomed into a potential BLB caliber hitter. Cherry was given the opportunity to play in Baltimore as a September call-up and didn't do too poorly. In 1994, Cherry made the AAA All-Star team before breaking his hand in a game late in the season. Cherry has started off the season on fire, hitting .371 so far in 1995 as a full-time outfielder.

I can only think of one better birthday present I could give you, Funclown.
