I've had a TON of 1st round busts too. Lately it's gotten better but I look back at some of my drafts and seriously don't know what I was thinking.

Not that I want to get into a bragging argument about who sucks more, but I'm pretty sure I take the cake here. Since 1984 (my first draft) I've only drafted 1 all-star in the first two rounds (C Clint Underwood) out of 21 picks.

My first round studs have included SP Raul Perez, 1B Willie Marshall, RF Glen Conley, all bums. A couple guys are having "success" elsewhere (Jerry Wilson, Cristobal Sandoval) but I've had no meaningful contributions from a first rounder at the BLB level since I've been here.

I have no doubt that you all suck, but I'm at least in the conversation.

    • Quick recap of my last few picks:

2.19 - SP Pat Kauffman - My scout grades Kauffman pretty nicely for the end of the second round, 4-5-7, but calls him a borderline 5th starter in his notes. Either way, he's put up decent stats @ Texas and I think I got good value here.

2.23 - CL CJ Skinner - I completely missed Skinner until I rechecked my list before this pick. My scout has him at 5-6-7, which is great, but what stood out to me is Skinner's four pitches. Despite the 3 for stamina, I'm probably going to give Skinner a shot at starting in a 6 man rotation and see how it goes. Worst case, I think I might have a decent middle reliever here.

SR.6 - RF Zach Hutchinson - Zach had the most potential left on my board at the time of this pick, but he's lazy as shit. I hate taking low work ethic guys, but I think he was the best option at the time.

SR.15 - C Robby Shumway - As Linty mentioned, Shumway somehow has managed to keep his scholarship at Rice for four years without playing an inning. Not even listed on the active roster, I'll probably come up with an article about what a dick Shumway is. I'm not quite sure what any of it means, but my scout likes his bat and like most of my picks, Robby is a hard worker.

3.9 - SP Dave Chernesky - At this point in the feeder league drafts, I'm excited to get anyone that my scout and OSA agrees is borderline serviceable. My scout has "the Chernesky disaster" at 5-6-4 and OSA likes him as well at 5-6-5. Who knows.

      • F you all.

We're not Bustavia for nothing. Plus I traded away the decent picks I had (new scout) for a win now team...who now has the 2nd worse record in the league.

It's 8 pm. I just got done swimming in the 78 degree ocean and I'm halfway lit checking SGN while the wife gets ready for dinner.

BTW the Batavia trade block when I get back features Sasaki, Bayer, Wouters, Castre, Kirby, and Dominguez.

        • I'm good for drafting guys that make All-Stars early in their careers and then become bums when they are supposed to enter their primes.

It has become a bit of a problem in these parts as you can see by my record.

          • You've all got me thinking...And that rarely turns out well...

I think my first draft was in the 1983 season, and I figure I've drafted 25 BLB-worthy players since then (excluding the current draft). I'd guess 7 guys have been or will likely be worthy of at least a little envy. That's out of a pool of 98 draftees. I don't know if 25.5% Major League realization is good or not.

I only have one note-worthy late-round pick: 1985 1B Curt Knight, 9th Round, #200 overall. But I've had 6 other serviceable guys drafted in rounds 6 through 9. Oddly, I don't believe anyone I've drafted in rounds 4 or 5 has had any success in the majors. With the exception of Knight, my best players have all been drafted in the first 3 rounds, as one would expect.

Regarding the current draft, none of my picks are making me giddy (including #1). My scout must be loving it, though. According to him my first three picks were #10, #15 and #14 on our board. Although, he pushed all of the best MR and CL prospects to the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

                • Is it just me or has this draft gotten progressively slower in the last day or two? Lot's of hot steals being analyzed?

No doubt. I think everyone has forgotten the draft is even ongoing at this point.

                    • Thinking the same things last night. Actually lead me to once again consider pitching the idea of trimming the draft. I was thinking maybe create the same size pool, but trim the draft itself to 8 rounds in the future. Might be worth at least talking through in the off-season.

That being said, we're still going to finish in plenty of time. Especially with my "Clay-cation" coming up in two SIMs.

                      • Morgantown missed their last pick, so by rule, shouldn't he be auto'd on his next pick(which just so happens to literally be the next pick)?

Haven't they been on auto since the first round? I think instead of trimming the the draft we should have a rule that after say round 5 or 6 you are either on auto by list or full auto period.

Can we make a thread of who has used their entire time and put them on full auto once a pick is missed?

                              • I've drafted six guys from 1982-1993 that have ended up as an All-Star. Nearly all of them made the All-Star team as a member of another organization.

It also seems that my way of drafting that worked with OOTP10 and earlier versions is not nearly as successful in OOTP11.
