I mean, obviously. The highest paid player is usually the most recent decent player to sign. If Woodbury were a FA right now he'd make upwards of $30M. But he's not and never will be, and neither will any of the other guys you listed.
I would've been surprised to see Woodbury fetch that much, but I guess there's always someone that's going to pay it. Kinsey came out looking for roughly 14.5 per. I thought that number would creep into the low 20s before he signed. Instead, it's going to be low 30s. He's a greedy bastard.

We've pretty much offered Kinsey what we have left in the bank and he still isn't happy! He's looking to take one of us to the cleaners.

So he's going to beat Harcourt's payday?

I don't even fault people for paying this type of money. It's not like you're actually running a business here - money unspent is dead money. There are teams with a lot of money to spend and so what if they overpay (by almost 2x) for a player if they have that much money to blow.

I'm actually glad that the players are asking for that type of money because they know teams will pay it. It's like they're aware of the salary climate for a change. The next change I'd like to see is other players becoming aware of what guys make in FA. Like players on the level of Kinsey and Carbajal should just flat out refuse to sign extensions because they now see that they can make an absolute shit-ton of money in free agency. But that doesn't happen.

I understand the "it's dead money if it isn't spent" thinking, but that's just for one year only, right? If you look over your roster and see three or four very talented players hitting arbitration in years 3-5 of (for sake of this discussion) Kinsey's 30+ per year contract, it's going to make you cringe. Could be a smart move now, maybe next year, but 3 or 4 years from now? Who's going to want that 34 year old making 30 million+ for a couple more seasons?

There are some teams that are built to win now, and it makes sense for them. It made sense for me at one point, too. Now...not so much.

Small victory for the Colonials this SIM. Locked in Olivo below his ARB number for the next few seasons. Keep him at $10 or lower until the Woodbury contract leaves the books. I know 10 teams want to try to bring him over and make him a Starter. Still taking calls.

I disagree with Skerik. I think it already does happen. Carbajal is not worth 18 million, which he was asking from me. He certainly isn't worth 23 million, which is what he started asking me right before free agency. It's as if he knew he could do well in free agency, so he was asking for more than he was worth so he either got it or gets it in FA.

We really energized the fan base this sim with the addition of 31 year olds 2B Vic Fernandez and MR Curt Shepard. Shepard allowed 5 baserunners and two runs in a one inning appearance against Syracuse last season so our guys already love him.
