It just seems hard to win in this game hoping that guys develop over time...especially with the theory that the parent club directly relates to minor league development. We fell from #3 to #7...then just kept dropping. Now I look at my minor league teams and they are all playing .600+ ball and I see more current/potential jumps than I ever did. Maybe it's just coaches...or luck...or whatever.
I'm not a proponent of that theory. At the risk of jinxing myself, I haven't noticed any major talent drops in my minor league system and we've been awful at the BLB level for a few seasons now. On the contrary, I've had a few guys see ratings and corresponding upgrades to their ranking in the top 100.

Obviously not every prospect is going to pan out. So my goal has been to simply stockpile as much talent as I possibly can and bring them along slowly, hoping for the best. I think I've done that these past few seasons. I'm not counting any chickens before they hatch, but I like the looks of my farm system. There will come a time that I need to make some trades, but the franchise players pretty much have to come from the farm.

I agree with just about everything you're saying... the most important of which is the concept of stockpiling as almost a "hedging". Even if you're lucky enough to have all of them (not going to happen) hit... you have a ton of bullets.

The farm system that I had that included Chavez, Maeda, Herrera, Morgan, Daly, etc... also had Vern Branch (DAV), Raul Gonzalez (IND) and other pieces that I used to "take my shot" when the team was ready. However, for every one that hit... I also missed a ton... as we all do. That's where you get to the tricky part of "selling high". I think you have to... have to... bring in cornerstone pieces from outside the organization in the 31-34 age range. I know that seems easier said than done... but those guys are always out there... you just have to be willing to trade that commodity that we all fall in love with - the prospect.

Shit... I was rambling.... anyway. Yeah. Knibb High Football Rules!!!

      • I can't believe this is the talent level for the 5th round.

        I'll be on auto.

        • I know everyone says that it's only because it's before the draft, but yeah, the overall talent depth has been down the last few years - at least in the eyes of my scout. I think it wouldn't be terrible to bump up the players created/entered for the draft to 20 rounds.

          • Disagree. I don't think there's less talent, I think the scouts are more level. I think there are less good players available later in the draft because they all get taken in the first 2-3 rounds.

            • Heh, I know Skerik hates hearing about players drafted after the 5th overall pick, but I'm really interested in my 4th rounder, Maurice Van Den Bosch. He's a LF, and my scout see's him as having good-ish contact, with otherwise average/below average talent.

But, he's also got some decent talent as a pitcher. My scout's got him at 5-3-7, with a 6 in stamina, and 3 pitches. He's got very high intelligence and normal work ethic. I'm hoping I can convert him to a reliever, possibly a starter. At 22 there won't be much time, but I'm curious.

                • I picked Angelo Sanchez on my phone during the Flyers game without looking at his ratings or anything. 5 stamina, 4 pitches, and a high work ethic! I think I done pretty good! This may be my new drafting method. I mean, he's got as much chance of being the next Finley Kinsey as everyone else....

                  • I have six picks left in the draft... I have six people left on my board.

I may have to use the Skerik technique soon

                    • Any way in the future where we can get the utility to show OSA rating/potentials for the players?

I get not putting scout ratings in there... but it's hard to see 'stats' for these guys without having an idea of what they potentially might turn out to be.

Would love if they'd update the utility and allow you to import your scout's thoughts on the players.

Sorry, thats a big stretch this far into a very average draft.

                        • I am away for the day. Gonna try to swing in some updates if possible but highly unlikely.

So if my list doesn't auto-draft, just set it , Clay. Thanks.

                          • With out 6th round pick, we selected Curt Hale. He figures to be a fixture in our bullpen for the next decade. Another great pick for Carolina.

So far in this draft I've selected the best overall player, completely rebuilt my bullpen and taken two starters who could eventually make the rotation. Not a bad effort.
