Trying to dig through some of BC's best "one-hit wonders" - a look at RB Sheldon Abbott. Drafted 4.2 in the 1997 BFL draft (3rd RB selected after Tyrone Tanaka at 1.4 and Brett Lewis at 2.1).
Abbott had the "misfortune" of being drafted during the peak of James Harden's tenure with BC, so was a backup from '97 - '01, when Harden left town via FA for one final season in Memphis.
Heading into 2002, Abbott had a sum total of 160 carries and 764 yards rushing (a 4.8 clip and 9 TD). To that point Abbott had made his real impact in the return game, registering 1 KR TD and 2 PR TD in the 2000 season.
With Harden gone, Abbott assumed the mantle, for what turned out to be a season that bypassed any prior franchise best season (Harden's 1998 - 1415 yds and 11 TD was the first true dominant BC RB1 season) to date.
Abbott went on to rush for a then franchise record 1543 yards, with a 4.9 per carry mark and 10 rushing TD's, that culminated in a Brewmaster Bowl victory over previously undefeated Seattle, where Abbott went for 110 yards and 1 TD, earning Offensive PoG (after missing the Canadian final due to injury).
That 2002 season resulted in:
-Brewmaster victory
-Offensive Player of the Year
-League MVP
In 2003 Abbott carried the ball only 45 times, and missed 10+ weeks of the season due to injury. And just like that, he was done.
