After the USFL's third season in 1985, the USFL team owners agreed to move the league to a fall schedule based upon New Jersey Generals owner Donald Trump's request. In the fall of 1986, the USFL officially went head to head against the NFL. The results were not favorable for the USFL and they failed miserably. Refusing to go down without the fight, the USFL and Donald Trump took the fight to the NFL outside of the stadium.
The USFL instead took the fight to the NFL in the courts by filing an antitrust lawsuit. The hope was that the USFL would either merge with the established league or win a sizable settlement. The merger never happened, and despite winning the lawsuit, the USFL was ultimately awarded only $3 for its troubles. The USFL folded and Trump was widely blamed by the other owners for the demise of the league.
In early 1987, Donald Trump approached The Governors of The Brewers Executive Enterprise Ring (B.E.E.R) and George W Bush about the success of their Brewers League Baseball. The BLB was able to successfully take on Major League Baseball and Trump wanted their support in launching a new football league. The BLB's infrastructure has always been attractive to other potential sports leagues including the failed launches of the BBA and BLH. The prior failures did not scare Trump and he further engaged with the BLB to tap into America's other pastime - football.
After several public taunts by Pete Rozelle, Trump's ego got the best of him and he cut a deal with the BLB to launch the Brewers Football League in the Fall of 1987. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed but what was known was that Trump would become commissioner of the BFL and all BFL/BLB franchises would have to open new Trump Hotels beside their stadiums.
The BFL awarded the following franchises:
BCFC Bears
Edmonton Herd
Toronto North
Windsor Gamblers
Houston RoughRiders
Memphis Pharaohs
Seattle Totems
New Orleans Reapers
Will the BFL grow to overtake the NFL? or will they flame out like other BLB affiliated sports leagues? or will Trump's ego get the best of him and the BFL will end in a bitter lawsuit with the NFL?
